Ok - So its a cold morning, and I have my first issue :(

So this morning its -2 out there, and after finally unfreezing the doors enough to get into the car, the next task was defrosting the window.

HOWEVER..

It would appear that my Fan / Heating is not working. The other day I noticed that the heating fan hadnt come on for at least 5 mins of driving. I thought odd... but it worked since. So question is whats going on.

1. Is there a minimum temperture the car needs to get to before the heating will kick in.. I'm discounting this as its been colder.
2. The battery is knackered so not providing enough power for fan usage, and so the drive I did the other day was enough to kick it into life.
3. The fan has had it.
4. Fuse?

So anyone had experience with this issue and how to fix it?
Thanks in advance.

If you go to manual mode and crank the fan control up to max what happens, engine running of course...

If no fan then it’s either the fuse and/or fan is knackered..

Try it with air in on and off as well...

Well, I had to leave the zed on the drive this morning as too cold, to defrost window, and probably have the same issue this evening after work, so had to slum it.

What do you mean by manual mode, and I assume you mean air con on / off. Which I did.
I switched the settings around, and could hear something when changing the modes, feet head screen etc. but no actual fan.

I assume and odb2 reader may give me some clue.

And if Fan, is this something that can be done at home, or is this something that only BMW / garage can do.

In my experience (35i) on a cold start with temps set to 22 deg both sides and air con off no fan action occurs until the engine is producing enough heat to actually warm the car (about 3-4 min in a 35i).
It is climate control so i would expect it to wait till the coolant is warm enough before it starts, how long that takes on a smaller engine might be a while, can't comment on that.

No I mean the fan button in the middle of the heater control (2nd unit from the right) its the rocker that has little fan on one side and big fan on other side

Thanks for confirming. That's the rocker I was using. It didn't matter what I did at this point nothing came out.
I have found a new motor for £44 from Amazon, and a swedish guy on you tube, so I know roughly how to replace if it comes to that. Still wondering if its something as simple as my battery level is too low to run it.

Although on my e85, my fan speed would pulsate and I eventually eliminated it with a fresh battery. It has got cold now too so id investigate the battery as you say.

If the engine is running and no other error lights /issues then no..

The fan does not have complex logic unlike the roof/water pump/oil pump/parking brake/ecu/auto/dsc/abs..

Suggest you check the fuse and read the diagnostics first..

If its the fuse, I would guess that I wouldnt have had the problem from the other morning, where it started 5mins later. {puzzled}
I will see what my reader comes up with tonight.

The fan speed in auto mode is commanded by the temperature control unit so by default won't run (fast) if you ask for heat and there isnt any..

Putting fan in manual mode overides this..hence my question?

Would be interested in the outcome you find. I have had this issue also in mine, looking for options to try and fix it.
Not the worst, but would help on those cold mornings to get the windscreen demisted quicker.

If you don’t have any joy with your reader you’re welcome to trundle up to mine & I’ll put my Carly on it mark

Have you tried pressing the button for the windscreen, the one above the heated rear window as that should put the fan on high even if the engine is cold

Yep. Tried that. I've got as far as the fuse box, but trying to work out what fuse by the diagram. Grr

Now this is interesting. I decided to my mind the fuse was fuse 88. However when looking at that one I decided I didn't have it. So with nothing better to do I put the fuse box back as it was. Just to check everything was still running I turned her on. And hey fan working again..

Weird.

Bloody hate those things, especially if you feed them after midnight, and get them wet.

and I'd say that was pretty good description of the E89 fusebox too..

I often wondered how "secure" moving all those electric cables around was although in my experience it (so far at least) has been ok.. :D

Last winter, I let my battery get really low and then the next day when I needed to use the car it took ages for the defrost function on the car to start working, and even then (with the engine on and driving), it wasn’t as powerful as it normally is.

Since then, and keeping the battery topped up, I’ve not had any issues - I wonder if when the battery is critically low, it causes problems with fan speed too? Just a thought.
