Slowly fixing more issues on this car. Levelling headlights should move up /down on switch on. Believe mine don’t . They seem high , both levelling rods seem fine , the units the connect to I don’t know how to test, any help welcome.
I have read that the levelling motors in the lights can become disconnected a ball pops out so doesn’t move the lense. To remove the headlight is it a bumper off job ? Going to see if I can access through the wheel arch being removed
Could it be they need adjusting down via the light unit screw

When you accelerate hard you should see the beams move down.
My car lights always cycle up down on power up.

You can't get at any interior parts of light without removing the lens, don't bother.
If lights are high wind down using the hex adjusters.

If mechanical problem within lamp would only effect one lamp.

No up down that’s for sure wife’s mini used to do the up down trick . I did wonder if the rod was broken and lights adjusted to suit, I have replaced rod since. May try wind them down

Plug in a code reader with bidirectional input. You can then test the light motors up and down movement . Once you confirm full range you should be able to rule out other error codes ref sensor adjustment.

Then you can focus on set up.

Here is my video for rear sensor.

Just a note, when my rear sensor died, my headlights went low. So your problem might be with the front sensor.

Your really should buy a code reader if you want to own a old BMW

If you have an android tablet of phone, get the Bimmergeeks Protool. Otherwise get the handheld Foxwell NT530. Cost about $150, Otherwise you can ask the dealer or indie to scan the codes and pay about $150 for one time use. It's a no brainer.

The FRM integrates both ride height sensors to determine to correct height

Basically two potentiometers.
At one point i was going to measure the values and fit a third to make the level adjustable.
Last MOT i left car lights set low, but mot person raised them, so just left alone.

Both the front and rear sensors are actually linear potentiometers and they work in tandem.
