I think I used 10/30 fully synthetic in our 2.2 z3, the most important thing is to change it often.

Castrol Edge seems to be recommended .... I just bought 7 liters 5/30 for 48 pounds including shipping from Germany...

Castrol Edge 0w-30 use 6.5Ltr with oil filter change.

0w30 is better if you drive in winter , in extreme tempeatures (-20c or more for example).
Otherwise 5w40 or 5w30 will do job fine. I suppose you are meaning M54 engine?

Castrol is generally recommended as "BMW recommends Castrol oils" is stamped on the OEM oil filler cap however BMW has now moved to promoting Shell oils so who can really say which brand is best is for the engine.
