Oil

Has anyone's E89 asked for oil yet? Mine is now just over 15 months old and hasn't asked for any additional oil yet. Mileage is quite... ahem... low - just hit 5000 miles a few days ago.

My E85 and E92 both asked for oil after about 12 months with the same soft of mileage. When I checked the oil level via the i-Drive the other day the electronic gauge showed it was right up at the max mark. :?

My 23i has done nearly 3,000 miles, the OBC still shows 19,000 miles to oil change. The mileage has not changed since I picked the car up 3 months ago. The oil level is still at top. I thought oil change was always required after the first 1,200 miles. Technology improves everyday. :D

Not oil change... its additional oil (a top up) that I mean!

I think on the E85 I added 1 litre after a year, and on the E92 it asked for 0.5 litre (that was the message on the dash).

Maybe as you say, with improved technology the 23i isn't as thirsty on oil from new! :D

Also, I really followed the running-in process, i.e. engine speed below 3,500 rpm not not exceeding speed limit for the first 1,200 miles. It could make the engine parts working better. :D

Me too! Wasn't easy but it was for the good of the car...

An engine really should not use any oil anyway. Shame the M54 is a thirsty beast! Good to know the E89 seems to be better though, and as you say running in has a lot to do with it.

Just coming up on 30,000km on an 04/09 build and it asked for a liter yesterday, which I don't think is too bad given my tendency to drive like I just stole it and a few hours on the Hockenheimring

Can anyone just confirm that E89 does not require 1,200-mile oil change? I went through the manual and service book, but did not mention about oil change after running-in.

The 1,200-mile oil change from other thread probably is just applied to Z4M and E85/E86. I'm just worried that I could have missed the oil change 2 months ago.

1,200 mile oil change only applies to ///M's

I'm sure its only the M's that need the 1200 miles oil change... not sure about the 35i or 35is...? I am however surprised it hasn't asked for a top up though. Mine will be getting the first service in May 2011, since it won't need one due to mileage before that.

I did 4k kms and I had to add oil (0.5 liters )after a fast trip on a dolomites pass...very furious trip....
In the meanwhile I added 0.2 liter of coolant....
as far as I know , no 1200 miles oil change.
my friend used more oil than me on his 3.0Sdrive, but he did 40 k kms in one year ....he added so much oil that BC changed oil change mileage prevision....firstly it showed 30 k kms for oil service, after the second oil fill up(so after about 2 liters) BC showed the next service is due at 40 k kms.....

I've put around 1 litre of oil in mine but it never was on the full mark when I got it. Around 3/4 full (I think it was around 12,000 miles). Topped it up to the full mark (Waited until the computer told me to add oil). It has now done just over 16,000 miles (also just come back from a UK South Coast road trip that racked up around 1200 miles). Checked oil yesterday and no movement at all. Could have been a bit of bedding in usage I guess. Cars going fantastic now it's got a few miles under it's belt. They are designed to be used these cars! :driving:

Just out of interest my 35i is taking a litre of oil every 8000 miles. I spoke to BMW as it has been a long time since i have had a car that uses oil like this and i was told that the engine is designed to burn oil and that the consumption on my car is about what they would expect. Has anyone else been told this by BMW?
I guess when i think back to my old MG's we were doing oil changes every 6000 miles anyway and servicing. My first service is scheduled for around 23000 miles, about 2000 miles away. I had a puncture last weekend so had to replace rear runflats, fortunately they were coming to the end of their life, original tyres on car so have done exceptionally well.
It must sound as if i drive like grandad but i promise she does get driven in anger :) (hope their is no one with the moniker grandad on the forum in case i cause offence :-) )

A litre per 8k is perfectly normal. Well as I said my old 330 would use a litre every 1k! And BMW said that was normal!

For ref, mine has used no oil in 3k so far
