Oil Warning Light - Amber when leaving car?

A few weeks ago I noticed that the Amber oil warning light was coming on when leaving the car. Had a look in the handbook, dipped the oil only to find it was a fraction off the top level of the dipstick. Put half a litre in and the light went out. Now it's back on again, no obvious leaks and surely Z's don't drink oil at that rate? Anyone have similar problem or advice as to what the problem may be?

oil should be checked 5-10 minutes after switch off from warm, not from cold...

our engines are part dry sumped (or something)... check your manual as for correct procedure but I know it definitely isn't from cold :D
 
Mine does this as well- has gone out when I return to the car. I assumed this was normal but would appreciate some confirmation.....
 
I wouldnt go so far as to say it was a problem :?

simply the car alerting you to the fact you may need to add some oil...

unless of course the sensor is faulty - hence the need to check with the dipstick (if you have one :D ) as described above.
 
Whatever you do, don't just blindly top the oil up as too much oil can be worse than none! Make sure your car is on a flat and always trust the dipstick over the 'low oil sensor' like gannet said. If the light shows upon switching the car off, the oil hasn't yet made it back down to the sump (why you should allow 5-10mins), so don't worry too much.
 
On my old E46 when the oil was low it would always show the yellow light when you switched the car off. So would have thought it would be the same on the Z4 too :)
 
mine did this today when I switched the engine off after a good run, so started up again and switched off and it didn,t appear then. weird
