Oil use - normal?

Ok quick question

I've done about 11-12k in my car since buying it last year (56 plate 2.0) mixture of city driving, motorways and the occasional obeying the speed limit  - every time I have checked the oil level its always been up to the max level on the indicator, today I did it and its dropped one "block" - still says "OK" though, and the driveway is dry, cant see any leaks or oil in the pans underneath - is it normal for these cars to use some oil over time?

PS - how much in terms of quanitity is one block? Would be a litre?

i would say a 1/4 but leave it,, it will tell you when it needs a top up and that is when you add a litre ....

jezzzz i put a ltr in every 1k miles.. and i have no leaks nothing.... :x

Oil use is normal yes. Wouldn't worry too much at this point.

Can't help re the gauge. I'm sure someone else can though...

Had mine for nearly 2 years and never had to top up the oil. It's had two services in that time though.

I guess it just depends on the engine, they are all slightly different.

Sorry, just wanted to see IvanDobskey's avatar. Always makes me smile :D
Er...yeah, anyway 1k miles per litre if thats what its getting through sounds excessive to me GaryH.

I had an Alfa Romeo 156 that needed topping up almost a litre per 1000 miles... it blew up on a hot day after a 500 mile journey.

Not me that needs topping up every 1k miles - Ive done 11-12k and its dropped one block on the oil indicator. Due for oil service in 1000 miles. Deka is the one who said he has to top it up every 1k miles!!

Some Bmw engine are "prone" to drinking more oil I had it once on a 330ci juds loved the stuff , nothing wrong with it, Bmw said that the way it was .. bit random

If you can go between services without topping up and oil level drops from full to half way or slightly below you have a very tight engine and have nothing to worry about.

Oil filter housing seal leaks are extremely common with some BMW engines--deteriorates after several years. I've been told I need to have mine replaced. Seems to go through 1 liter every 5000 miles or so, not a big deal yet, so I've put it off.

As stated before this isn't unusual. My old 330 used to love a drop of oil, using a litre every 1000 or so miles. I have just had to top up my Zed, around half a litre after 3000 miles.

I have read that the earlier 3 litre engines had leaky valve stem seal issues which allowed oil through thus increasing the consumption. If I recall correctly BMW upgraded the seals in 2001/2002 which helped reduce consumption. How much truth there is to this I don't know, but my Zed certainly uses much less oil than my 2001 330...

coming up for inspec2 shortly so am going to ask them to check it out, but have already done some digging around and as rookie says this is not unusual...... :(

still am hoping that its just a leak somewhere,, although i have none on the drive or in the engine bay and it does not burn any oil in the exhaust... spooky.

The car tells you when it needs a top up and then its usually between 1/2 and one litre. This has only happend once to me and it was when it well overdue an oil service. So i really wouldnt worry about it.
