Oil Top-up

I've searched the forums but no one's asked anything as stupid as this yet regarding oil top ups

The yellow oil light warning came on yesterday when I turned the engine off along with the "1.0l +" indicating I need to put in a litres worth of oil to tide me over. Hopefully i've got that part right. The oil reading was down to its last 'block' if you get my drift.

Just topped up JUST under a litre (wanted to be on the careful side!) with some Castrol Edge 0W-30 as recommended. Turned the engine on again (engine is cold) and the reading is still showing the same. Is it just a basic question of waiting a bit longer before I check the level again because I literally checked 2mins after topping up? I plan to check again in about 3 hours (when I leave work) so hopefully the level will at least go up 3/4 full!

Am I following the right trail of thought? :?

Aren't our cars part dry sumped.. meaning true level is only achieved when warm.

In the older preface lift cars we just get a light and have to check using the dipstick and only when the engine is warmed through and left to stand for 5 minutes...

Hmm well after my commute home (40miles ish)..wont the engine be too hot for an accurate reading? Mines an 06 3.0si by the way

From the 2006 model year manual (admittedly a US one but hey ho):

For a precise measurement and display of the oil level, it is necessary that the engine be at operating temperature, i.e. after uninterrupted driving for at least approx. 6.5 miles/10 km. You can have the oil level displayed while you are driving, or while the vehicle is at a standstill on a level seurface and the engine is running.
