oil top up and bulb replacement

chaps,

i have a 2008 2.5si and need to top up the oil as it shows as only 1/4 on the cluster dipstick.. my question is what is the difference between the low and high marks on said electronic dipstick shall i just put a very small amount in and keep checking.. the annoyance is that you cant check till engine is running and warm..

car uses a bit of oil and i have a small leak on the cam cover gasket so will top up untill i can get the gasket done and will do a service at the same time,

secondly i have a headlight out can this be changed with wheel on i see some people say wheel has to come off to get to the panel ect

As far as im aware you should wait till you get the computer telling you to add oil and then put in 1 litre, you shouldn't need to top up until the car asks you to.... you can access panels fairly easily with the wheel on although obviously its a lot easier with it off
 
I never take the wheel off. Turn the wheel outwards and loads of room. access panels are a 1/2 turn with coin, washer, etc.

Just remember to seat the light access cover correctly with no trapped wires and clip properly locked into both points
 
thank you chaps, ill wait for the car to ask for oil then just feels counter intuitive to not top up your car when you know its not at optimum level :/

It will still be holding 5 and a half litres when it asks for more so don't worry about it running low :thumbsup:
 
Personally, I would keep checking and not rely on the warning light - would prefer oil to stay towards top of dipstick markings in a situation like yours. I would also get the leak fixed asap as it will only get worse and then you can do a proper review as to whether car is using too much oil.
Also I dont understand why you can only check oil on dipstick when it is warm and circulating, unless you have one of those non dipstick cars.

The si models all have electronic dipsticks on the dashboard Mike :thumbsup:

As someone who is addicted to checking the dipstick I am fairly pleased I didnt get one with an electronic dipstick. Imagine how disapointed I would have been. Must question however why a manufacturer would want to do away with such a crucial (and enjoyable) feature. I can only assume they want owners to drive straight to the main dealer when the oil light comes on to have a diagnostic done and then a wallet busting top up.
