Oil temperature 2.8i

Hi all,

I’m seeing something suspicious. Please guys, can you give me your opinions?

I have a z4 2.8i automatic. After my car went to the servicing with the dealer, the oil temperature in steady-IDLE state (i.e after driving and then stopping for a while without turning off the engine) is between 85~90 degrees. Only in the motorway reaches 110 degrees. Before the servicing, the oil temp was always stable between 100~110 even in IDLE. I went to the dealer and they said my car is fine but they didn’t know why it changed. They said that in the last visit they updated the software so that might explain that. That seems odd to me. I live in UK and the outside temperature is around 13 degrees so not too cold.

Thanks

My 2.8 runs at about the same temp, but it always has been lower than half even on a spirited run

Hi, I’d only worry if it started to run hotter, my 20i normally sits below the half way point on the gauge.

The water pump is controlled by the DME aka engine ECU.

It’s speed is varied based on several factors...

It’s conceivable that the DME software has been changed and this affects how the DME manages the water pump...

Your water temps accord with mine...

What I find odd is that the oil temp needle used to be in the center (at around 110 degrees), regardless if I was driving on the motorway or just leaving the engine idle forever. After my car went to the servicing, things are different: when I'm in the motorway, the temperature is 110 degrees, but if I stop and leave the engine idle, the temperature drops very quickly to 90 degrees. Not sure if going from 110 to 90 and then to 110 is good as the engine is suffering from continuos expansion/contration stress due to heat variations.
See attachment.

As I said, I went to the dealer and they didn't know why it changed (they charged me £100 anyway) but they assured me that what I see now is completely normal.

Thanks guys.
