Oil temp

20i here and I noticed in the last week it's jumped up quicker to the quarter line if I recall. Maybe 20 mins? I think it was taking longer before with the cold spell we had for mine anyhoo (only had mine a couple of months).

Ours is going in the shop tonight and 1 of the concerns is the gauge doesn't move, and if it does, just a couple of clicks.
The manual says half way

Well heard from BMW today.
It's a temp sensor somewhere that won't let the engine oil warm and at the same time telling the rad fan that it is over heating.
Parts are ordered and the loaner 528 stays in the stable a couple of days

Half way? Really? That 120 degrees Celsius or 248 degrees Fahrenheit. That seems extremely high for a 2.0l engine. I'd expect it to sit around 90 to 100 degrees Celsius. Half way is ///M engine temps on a warm day.

My 35is sits around 110 to 115 degrees Celsius on an average day. Make it a rather warm summers day around 25 degrees plus and it sits at 120 bang on. I expect those temps from the N54T but not the N20.

Edit - just checked the handbook it does state the middle but I'm not convinced that's for every engine. The warmer the oil, the more likely it is to deteriorate and require changing and the less 'efficent' a car can become which is supposed to be the whole point of the 4 pots.

Remember , this is oil temp

Fully aware it's oil temp.

In general even after the fix I wouldn't expect it to sit at 120 degrees Celsius/250 degrees Fahrenheit on a 2.0l. Normal operating temp the gauge will move but it won't be half way. It should be nearer the middle than to the left side of the gague but I wouldn't expect it dead on or just bordering on half way.

I ran two E88s a 135i and a 120i, the 135i ran nearer the 120 degrees c / 248 degrees f but the 120i ran around 100 degrees c / 248 degrees f. Both run exactly the same on the same journeys

Part was on back order and still is... they found one a couple hundred miles from here and had it shipped to them.
After a week got the car back last night.
This morning my wife texts me that the temp gauge worked right away last night...but this AM didn't move a bit.
Seems this part is recalled on the 5 series. But they haven't had any problem on the Z....YET

Had 3 E89's (23, 28, 20) the oil temp on all of then sits just below halfway at steady running condition regardless of ambient temp.

This is after a 3 hour 'spirited' drive earlier today.

This is standard. The handbook states halfway but it's not halfway so 110 degrees Celsius is about the 'norm'.
