I've done it (watched mostly) on an E46 with the M54 engine if that helps Geoff? It's broadly the same process.
It's a difficult job involving lifting the engine off the mounting brackets, undoing all of the connectors to the engine support crossmember underneath and moving the engine support crossmember to one side. You need a hoist to hold the engine up.
Not a tough job for a garage with all of the gear, but time consuming.
