Oil service

Hi, I called a bmw dealer today and i was quoted £84 for an oil service, if I provide the oil. I have a z4 2.0i 2008. Which oil do i have to use? Can i use 0W30? Where is the cheapest place to buy it?

Asda have an offer on Mobil 1 at the moment - 5L of 5w30 was £32, which i think is the recommended grade for the N46.

Use the best you can afford - oil is the life blood of your engine. Give the Castrol link a go:

Surely BMW will only use one of their specified oils from your manual and if not in there the service desk.
I can't see how they would accept liability for anything else, so don't second guess an equal from somewhere else.

But then we know only too well the variation in quality and indeed sensibility of service that we receive from the cosmopolitan mix of BMW garages and service centres across the UK.
 
Alan - I agree and would not put it past BMW to put in what they had at the time and am sure more than the odd car has gone out with a dubious oil in it...

Jeff - Again I agree that any oil brand of the correct spec will do, however my thinking was more about the pedantic attitude of the service desk towards customer supplied oils.

All this said I have been surprised at times when oem supplied oil is cheaper than the general public can get it themsleves, especially when you add in the time and effort and petrol to go find it.

Frankly I do all mine myslef, my local indy stamps the book and I'm sure of quality and best price, but do know ther eare many reasons to keep the genuine BMW service.
 
I mentioned on another thread that I bought my oil from the dealer, that's where it was actually the cheapest...to my surprise :o
 
Changing your oil and filter is one of the easiest jobs you can do, and you will save yourself a small fortune. Even if you don't fancy undoing a sump nut you can use a vacuum oil extractor (found on e-bay). Simply put the tube down the dip stick funnel and pump.

Before you pay a chap nearly £100 to undo one filter and one sump nut have a look at it yourself. You will be wondering why you didn't do it years ago.

How good is this item at removing any residual bits from the bottom of the sump? Think Id prefer it to all run out, at least you know you get the worst bits of the oil.
 
My oil service is due in 2k and I was going to do it myself. However, National Tyres and Autocare will do it with Castrol Edge 5W-30 , LL04 spec plus filter for £49.50!
Thats cheaper than I could buy the parts for (well almost) and it saves driving to the tip to get rid of the old stuff. I do enjoy warming the engine up and leaving it to drip, drip, drip though :D The satisfaction of a job well done I suppose.......

Does anyone have a tech sheet for the oil service? I want to make sure anything else due is taken care of. :thumbsup:
