Oil service

How much should I be paying for a BMW independent specialist for a an oil service? I have been quoted £472 which I think is way too much!

What exactly is done for the oil service as I do mine myself

Are all oils/fluids changed

Engine 6 to 7 ltrs of 10/60W oil a good brand time to change inc oil filter 30mins

Gear box oil 2ltrs max, time to change 30 mins needs to be on a ramp to make it easy

Diff oil this needs 1ltr of oil and a little tub of friction modifier, time to change 30 mins needs to be on a ramp to make it easy

Power steering fluid unlikely to be changed but may take 45 mins

Brake fluid change and bleed maybe an hour if on a ramp or axle stands and if the wheels are off or not, plus the fluid

3 hours at £60 per hour £180 plus the cost of the fluids search euro parts for the cost of these.

And forgot to mention the previous owner paid £ 354 including MOT and vat the previous year with BMW. Hence my concerns! I have called BMW official dealer in Peterborough 3 times over two days and left messages with staff and they have still failed to call me back to get a price from them!

Sorry I edited my question out as I realised this is in the M section

£150-£200 max for an independent (Poss less tbh). Literally engine oil and filter. No other fluids changed.

If it’s just an oil service then £150 max, buy the oil yourself from europcarparts and it’ll be even less. The dealer is taking the piss here.

Plus an hour to change it and look around the car

So £160

And you will have some oil left over for top ups if required.

Personally I’d stick to Castrol oil and a Mahle filter.
5.5 to 6 litres max for an oil change.

Andy

I was advised to use Mobil 1 by both Mr Vanos and Simon Thorpe, the comment about Castrol was it turns a bit sticky or waxy not the best decryption I know, but when I removed my front timing cover last weekend there was a stubben oil residue on the inside of the casing.

However I do not know what oil has been in the car before I got it so it is a bit of guess work as to what was used before and weather Mobil 1 would leave the same residue

Personal preference and choice............

Fair enough, not heard of Simon Thorpe though.
I purely base it on Castrol is tried and tested since these cars were made and had no problems yet personally so no reason to change, though shorter intervals is clearly best whatever oil you use. Not to say Castrol is the best available though.

That's not an 'oil service' though, that's more of an 'all fluids service'.

An oil service is simply the engine oil and oil filter. Diff & Gearbox are only scheduled to be done on Inspection II.

Oil service: £170-£200
Inspection I: £500
Inspection II: £700-£1,000

OP, who quoted you that price?

I also think that an oil service include the Microfilter!
but why would a micro filter add £400 to the £200 engine oil service?

The info on the BMW service site is terrible too...it claims an inspection II is recommended every 18,000 miles...or 2 years...and doesn’t include gearbox or diff oil changes

Something very wrong going on there I think.

I've actually been calling around lately:

BMW - £202 + £78 for an 'inspection'
Indies - around £83 labour or £180 to supply oil & filter.

What are they general views on the oil filter? I see people have mentioned Mahle and Bosch, I've been buying the BMW part at C. £22, I change the oil every 2-3k, is there any real difference between these filters?

Regarding the filter, BMW will supply you with a Mahle OX 187D filter which is readily available at many other places for about a tenner max so you can just as easily get one elsewhere a save a bit. The only difference is it won’t have a BMW logo printed on it. Sure Bosch etc. are fine but may as well go for the OE filter when cost is negligible.
