Has anyone had a oil service done recently on a 3.0 si ? Mines needs one to 1.5k miles so will get it done prior to sale. Had a price of £231 today from local dealer. Found price of £179 on http://www.maindealerdiscount.com/search#.U02bjCe9KSM anyone got a better price ?

You can get it done for about £80 at ATS, even cheaper at National. You won't find a cheaper oil service, you can't even buy the oil for that price and do it yourself. You can watch them do it to make sure they don't screw it up if you're worried. I'd never go anywhere else for an oil service now, there's no difference apart from the price.

Paid £119.00 from my indy. Was happy with that. Oil on it's own was about 50 quid. The rest is labour and stamp in the book.

This for sure. I was going to do my X5 myself until I saw the National Tyres offer. Ended up paying £67 including parts and labour. They used to use Castrol Edge but have recently changed to Fuchs fully synthetic to LL04 standard.

It depends how much you value a main dealer stamp but when they are nearly £200 dearer, for a job an untrained monkey could do, I know where my hard earned would be spent.

Cheers folks, want it done by BMW. Car has fbmwsh so not going to change that when car is going up for sale. Could do it myself but want the dealer stamp & to give people the peice of mind my car is looked after.

You could try these guys if you fancy a trip to Glasgow:

http://www.prestigecarspecialists.com

Also known previously as BMW Independant next to Ibrox stadium but they also have garage next to cowcadens - walking distance to sauchihall street, oil service was £110 excl vat for an M using castrol edge. They do everything to bmw standard and will stamp your book as such. Mine was an in between inspection oil service.

They also did brake fluid service for £45 excl vat.

I just used them this week to do my oil and brake service, they also include a general points check as part of the oil service work.
Good friendly service and most importantly they use bmw processes parts so it doesn't affect bmw warranties etc if you're worried about that. I used the one at ibrox

If you want another option- I haven't used b for bmw in Clydebank but they have also been given good feedback, they also operate on similar not invalidating bmw warranty service.

Cheers, a few of my mates have used b for BMW In Clydebank & were very impressed. Have someone at work interested in my car so will have a wee word with them & see what's what

Am I missing something? £231 for an oil change? Some one is taking the Piss for sure. How much can a rubber stamp cost in terms of materials and labour? They charge that much because people pay it. Not this one.

£40.46 inc for my 2.0 at National Tyres using a 'Premium fully synthetic 5W 30' inc filter. says its for 5 litres on website. Going to give them a shot.

People like you are the reason dealers charge an absolute fortune.

Are you saying athat getting your car serviced by a bmw specialist means you don't look after your car as much as someone who takes it to a bmw dealer?

The specialist more than likely takes more care and does the better job.

Brainwashed.

I'm older than most people on this site, and thus, have probably owned more cars than most. I have a car lift in my garage and like to do as much maintenance and repair work as I can. I have sold and traded many cars...often simple sports cars and some pretty fancy Mercedes. I keep personal records of all work done on the cars using check sheets. I've never once had anyone question that the work was actually performed. Which means I do my own oil changes as much as I can. I also do changes that the factories no longer mention...change brake fluid, change coolant, etc.. Normally when a buyer of my car sees the extensive maintenance they don't question whether or not a dealer stamped a book.
All that being said, when I do use synthetic oil I normally opt for buying Mobile 1 at either Walmart or Costco. I've used synthetic on German cars, but not sure that they even need it. I've had cars run to 195,000 miles and with no engine problems whatsoever by just using a decent brand of oil and filter from any store. $200 and $300 for oil changes and a few checked items is totally idiotic in my thinking.
I suspect that BMW and Mercedes push synthetic oils becuase they eek out an extra 1-2 miles per gallon. Any thoughts on this theory?

It's not the oil that is overpriced from the dealers, it's the labour charge to do the change. I'm guessing the synthetic oils are to do with modern engines / lubricants etc, our major problem in the UK is that approved dealers charging say £100 per hour for labour versus £50-£65 at an independent specialist, or cheaper at the major chains - National/Kwik fit etc.

PS. Having a car lift in your garage is a motor heads dream for us in the uk

Regarding a car lift. About 8 yrs. ago I paid $2,100 for the lift and $200 for a guy to install it. A friend of mine told me I was crazy to spend that much money on a hobby. I had to remind him that the boat he bought a few years back had already depreciated by about $25,000. So much for that argument  If you have the space and like to work on your own cars, a lift is a pretty good hobby investment. The newer cars however are so complicated that it's hard for a hobbiest mechanic to fix much. I do fluids, brakes, exhaust (on older cars) and anything else that I don't feel that I will screw up. I do have an old car (1966 Sunbeam Tiger) that I can do almost anything on. Raise the hood and actually recognize the various components.
