Oil Service every 2 years

I need an oil service because it's been 2 years now since inspection I was carried out, but the car indicates another 5k miles for the oil service. what will bmw do when I take it for an oil change? will they reset it? if so, then that'll mean i'll have to do the inspection II before it's actually due?

Yes BMW will reset, if you dont do the mileage the two year period kicks in instead. My first oil was done at 19k (2 years), but my inspection would would be around 28k (4 years) if I kept the car long enough, as I'm not doing the miles now.

But it's only the oil that needs changing every 2 years, so why do you need to do an inspection service?? as the serviceable parts involved in an inspection I/II service (bar the oil) aren't technically due for a change.

Personally I like the idea of fresh oil every 12 months. Rather than fork out for stuff that doesn't need doing I will take it somewhere (probably not BMW)for an oil and filter change and ask them not to reset the service lights.

In the States it is an oil change, filter when the service indicator says so or 1 per year regardless of mileage. BMW pays for the mid cycle oil change each year if you don't have the mileage necessary. They will not reset the service indicator for the mid cycle change.

RPS is correct. But that is in the USA. I am not sure what BMW says for in the rest of the world. It could be different.

Oil change
Inspection 1 (inc oil change)
Oil change
Inspection 2 (inc oil change)
and repeat to infinity (and beyond...)

Timing of the oil change/Inspection 1/Inspection 2 will be based on the service indicator OR every 2 years if you don't do the mileage, i.e. if you don't cover the miles, the service indicator becomes irrelevant.

I cover approx 6k per year so will be on the 2-year timescales, but I change the oil/filter every 12 months regardless just for piece of mind. BMW aren't involved with serviving mine (independent garage) who only reset the service indicator at the "official" service intervals and not at my extra oil changes.

Don't forget brake fluid every 2 years too.

That was the same question I asked in the M section as I had the same query.

If for inspection I, the mileage still reads 8k miles I don't know if it should be performed or if just another oil service and brake fluid should be done, and the Insp I when the indicator shows it.

How many times do I have to tell you, you will need an Inspection 1 in May :poke:

but no where in the service book does it state that you need to do a service every two years?? It only states that you need to change the oil at least every two years.

yes ... it is hydroscopic, so the water in the fluid would rot the pipes and all components from the inside.

Will get this done when it's in then! It's not showing any message to say it needs it though! Maybe they just haven't stamped it? Surely they wouldn't go through all inspection without??

dont you have a little yellow square with a clock in it above the odometer when you turn on the ignition :?
