Oil service due.

Bmw will try to include an overpriced cabin filter, seems a little pointless on a car you drive with the roof down where possible

I had mine done a few months ago and priced it up online then contacted a local garage. The local garage was more expensive, so I booked it online. The service lady rang to say they weren't doing Saturday appointments at that time so we moved it to a weekday.

Went to collect it...price more than quoted online....they'd taken the liberty of changing the microfilter for me. They said it should be done every 2 years but what p$55ed me off was thats not what I booked online - either the service lady changed it when she altered the appt or they just decided to do it.

I never found out if the independent included the microfilter as well.

And to rub it in, there was a noise when the fan was on...after asking on here and getting advice I just blasted the blower for a while and whatever it was (probably a leaf) must have moved cos its quiet now.

And to finish the story off they also scammed me £10 for sanitising the car! There was a notice on the desk when I dropped the car off, but they didn't make me aware of it. So they decide to re-open in covid times and charge the customer for the measures they should be taking to protect staff and customers.

They mean a quick squirt of a diluted jollop and a quick wipe over with a bit of bog roll of the potential touch points. They make it sound so involved.

Exactly! When I collected the loan car, the previous customer was late bringing it back, so it wasn't ready for me. When it arrived, she went out with a spray bottle and cloth and was back within 2 minutes.

No doubt this is what they did to my car.

I bend over too easily when I'm in my stealers!

Ever thought about getting clued-up to do it yourself?
I calculated that I've saved literally 1000's over the years by doing my own oil changes on various cars.
Of course it's convenient to take it to a garage but there's nothing like the satisfaction you get from DIY.

In any case what I do have are a very particular set of skills. Skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you.

Just popped up. Take it to BMW or somewhere else? Where do you take your car for an 'oil service' which I assume is, ahem, oil and filter.

I agree with what Chris_D wrote though, I'm not much of a mechanic myself, but this is a pretty easy thing to do. Have done if for my previous car (e46 convertible) and recently did it for my 2015 z4. It's actually quite enjoyable to do & I liked the learning part.

• Rented a spot at a DYI garage where the car could go on a bridge (which I got to operate, yippee!) about 30 euro

• Made sure I got all the right tools, (tension wrench (have it already)and 'key' for the oil filter) 10 euro

• Got the right oil from the same shop: Castrol 5W30 if my memory is correct, also got the right filter there. less than 50 euro

30 minutes work & you are done, very satisfying.

Does the car have full BMW service history?

If so take it to BMW and say you’re a BMW Car Club member to get discount.

If not find a good reputable BMW specialist and take it there. Or alternatively do it yourself.

In my experiences, there is often not much difference in pricing between a main dealer and an indy.

A way of reducing cost is to supply your own oil, however some main dealers will reject this (shouldn’t be a problem with an indy).

Nevertheless be dubious as the last indy to do an oil service on my car overfilled my engine oil by 1.5 litres, which just goes to show that even reputable indies can make pretty basic mistakes and cannot be fully trusted.

Like some others have said,Ive saved a fortune over the years doing my own work. However those days are gone. I could get down to do the work but I couldn't get back up again. I would be like a tortoise on its back!

Changing the oil isn't rocket science - but I always stick with one brand of oil. I don't like mixing manufacturers.

If you trust your local village garage then I would just take it there. Just make sure they use quality oil and filter, better yet buy the oil and filter online (it will probably be cheaper than what the garage will charge you) and just pay the garage the labour to change the oil. This is exactly what I did, bought the oil and filter myself and paid my local Indi 30€ to change it reset the service light and stamp the book!

I could do it myself and have done so in the past but for just 20 to 30€ I really can't be asked with the hassle of jacking the car up and working underneath the car on my back! Same goes when I had the front pads changed, paid my trusty mechanic 30€!

I'd suggest this as well.
Although a benefit of taking it to the dealer is any available software updates which an Indy shop might not have.

An extra £29 for convenience and a hire car is worth paying, especially if you need to get into work whilst they sort it. Some also value a BMW service stamp more than Indy ones (and also think that an Inspection I is anything more than a posh oil change).

Yeah, it is £129 at the local dealer which is 12 miles from me. This dealer doesn't have a good reputation, well, with at least one person on this board. Anyway, I have booked it in to the village garage who have been fine with my other cars. He is also a bit of an enthusiast. He owns something called a b-x-st-r.
