Oil required for service

Hi all,

Love this forum and the wealth of information. Love my Z4 more though :thumbsup:

I did my 2.5 Si this weekend just gone and the one thing to note is the oil filter. I warmed the engine and dropped the sump plug as I wanted to let it drain for a few hours. Then I moved up to the oil filter at the top front of the engine. It became clear that the filter had not been replaced for a long time. It was impossible to get the oil filter housing off and as it is plastic I was conscious that I had to be careful as it is easy to damage.
I tried a few methods but the housing would not budge. In the end I purchased a strap for the job and it had a rubber inner lining. It still needed a fair amount of effort but it did finally move. It had clearly not been off for a while so I do wonder when it was last changed.

I have since purchased the large 16 point socket for next time.

Any way just my recent experience.
 
Thanks folks, should have specified I'm buying the bits then paying the local trusted garage to sort. Hopefully they'll have less issue than Paul!
 
I used to do that too... but so much more satisfying doing a diy :) worth noting that you should probably start with 6 litres and then top up as required. Awfully hard to remove too much oil... but much easier to add more!

Wouldn’t fancy doing it in this weather tho! Hope all goes well :)
 
I sucked out nigh on 7.5 litres with my PELA pump last oil service, which I was quite surprised at.
Wasn't overfilled and I posted here about it at the time.
Maybe someone bored out the cylinders before I owned it, I dunno :o :lol:
Officially it's 6.5 litres though.

Related question: When doing a DIY oil change, what's the recommended way to drain the sump in terms of jacking? Will it drain while raised, or do you have to lower it once the drain plug is out?

Always drained with it jacked up (but remember to open the oil filler cap to allow it to drain better).

Other top tip: be very careful NOT to throw away the oil filter cap insert (along with the oil filter). If you do, the oil won't be filtered properly and it can cause issues with the Vanos solenoids/throw up engine codes and cause idle problems. This especially applicable to the N52 engine.

Did mine level'ish. However, once nothing more than a few drops came out, I raised each side of the car independently, trying to squeeze out some more.

and in my 2.5si, I believe raising the left side (pax side) high released some previously untapped oil. Filled it up to 6.25L and shortly after added the additional 0.25..
