Oil pump question

Evening

I’m planning next weekend to do vanos, water pump and thermostat plus a load of small jobs in the engine bay area

2003 M54 3.0

I’ve read that the o ring seal can fail on the oil pump (may have that wrong) but the sentiment was it’s a 5p job to save a lot of heartache

Anyone got the detail/how to?

Cheers

Not sure but you may be thinking about the seal on the oil filter housing. Mine was leaking, it's cheap & well worth doing https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Oil-Filt...d-5da9-4037-a4a2-a838ee19812c&redirect=mobile.

Water pumps aren't usually a problem on the M54 as they're mechanically driven, not electric like on the N52.

Cheers, Dave

Thanks Dave that’s the one

Doing the water pump as a preventative job- took mine off the last one and it was on its last legs at 100k

No problem Stuart.

I'll take note of the water pump for the future as mines on 90k now. Did you have any issues previously or was that also just a preventative job at the time?

Started as preventative- felt definite play in the pulley when I replaced the belts

Personal tip- replace with a metal impeller not a cheaper plastic one

Thanks again!

Makes sense to change the oil filter housing to block gasket, they go hard and brittle like cam cover gaskets and end up leaking after all the heat cycles they endure. Whilst you have it stripped down for the other renewals best change it.

Colb you got a how to at all?

Could this be what you were thinking about ?

Got it from this website:

5. Oil Pump Nut

Yes, just the nut. One little part, that can cause a complete and catastrophic engine failure.

“I’ve been tearing down my engine for a complete rebuild this past week. Today when I went to remove the oil pump, I found the oil pump nut loose. I touched it with my finger and it spun!

I don’t know how long it has been like this, but it sent a shiver down my neck. If I hadn’t decided to rebuild my engine, I may not have checked the oil pump nut, and I’m fairly certain the sprocket would have come off. This would result in a total loss of oil pressure, and as a result, my engine would get toasted.

For those of you that race your car, and use an increased engine RPM limit like the Shark Injector provides, beware. My engine at the time of tear down had about 70k miles.”

Yeah that sounds familiar.

I think Chris was saying to do it as a preventative

I just did my oil filter housing gasket a couple of weeks ago, one note that I did not read anywhere prior to doing it.

I changed the oil at the same time and the filter housing apparently holds a good bit of oil that doesn't drain out in a regular oil change.

All that to say that it took 2 full gallons of oil to top it up on the dipstick.

Stuart, don't forget they'll be American gallons . Probably the only thing that's smaller in the USA  .
