Oil pressure switch

Has anyone had to replace an oil pressure switch?

The indie dealer i bought my car from (300 miles away!) has sent me the part to fit my car to fix an oil warning light that comes on when the level is fine, but i'm a moron when it comes to cars.

Has anyone here changed one and if so how hard / risky is it? It looks to just screw in somewhere and the guy who sold me the car claims it is a very simple job.

Stealer quoted me £60 to change it though (even when i'm providing the part!) so am thinking of taking it to any old garage unless it is a quick fix....

Looks like an easy job.

As does the oil filter change... is it really just in a housing like that with a screw on top?

Thanks for that, it does look basic! :D

Does anyone think the car should be cold? Should the oil be emptied first?

I did it on my Z3 Coupe that had the same issue. I doubt you can do it and not need to change the oil or at least lose most of the oil.

Edit, are you talking about the Oil Pressure Switch or the Oil Level Sensor? Oil Level Sensor was the one most people have had issues with (like me) and it is located under the car. If Oil Pressure Switch, you can replace it without draining the oil.

Hi Andy, it was the oil pressure switch thankfully so looks to be a much easier job :)

Thanks for the response!

If you can readily get to the switch, it should be very easy. I have not done this repair but this is the way I would go about it.

Since the switch on the top of the engine, I don't think you have to drain the oil. On the safe side, pull the oil filter cartridge to get excess oil out of the filter housing. YES, changing the filter is that easy. Take the top off and lift the filter out... looking at the RealOEM drawing that Smokin provided, that may be an unnecessary step..

Then put a rag under the pressure switch and then remove and replace the switch. You can replace the filter or just put a new one in. When I put a new filter in, I coat the filter element with new oil.

Top off the oil then start the car and look for oil leaks around the sensor and filter housing... That should be it..

Just curious, if you park with the car sideways on a slope so the oil filter housing is almost vertical, can you just take the lid off and inspect the filter etc without any oil leaking issues?
