 i'm from the bay (california)
so here's what i want.......

an oil change.

my car right now has "BMW High Performance" oil in it that i had gotten from the dealership. the viscosity is 10w-60. im doing an oil change!

i want something similar to that. what do you folks recommend???? in all cases.. i'll prolly end up using castrol syntec 20w50 (i live in florida.. always warm) or valvoline. but..... maybe i can put something better in?????

thanx*

I highly recommend you stick with the Castrol TWS if inside of powertrain warranty - if not go with this, albeit they're the same general price so why bother.

Why are BMW using 10w60 for your car?
Your engine specific oil is 5w30,

Only M Engines use the 10w60, Go and buy Mobil-1 5w30 and be done with it

Didn't catch that - not an M? Curious on the oil choice now...

my mechanic used that oil. if i understand correctly how the oil works.. the 5w is for the cold weather and the 60 is how hot the car gets. am i wrong????

but anywaise... i imagine the M oil was used cuz i like to take my car out at nite and go for spirited driving a lot. my mechanic claimed that the oil he was gonna use was gonna be a whole lot better than the standard castrol stuff the car has printed on the it.

correct me if i'm wrong.

to this day.. i havent had any problems and from the way i drive.. i definitely don't mind having oil from a M racer-type car protecting my engine vitals. and just because my car isn't a M series doesn't mean i can't stop and take a minute to see what my choices are.

You car was designed for 5w30, Its thinner than a 10w60 oil (which still amazes me a high revving engine like a S54 requires a thick oil)
Putting the wrong oil doesn't make you car better at night lol,

Simply put, your mechanic is wrong and I hope you wasn't charged what this oil sells for a liter,

Cheapest I have seen is $8.95 a liter, Most places sell the M oil for $12.95
My car HAS to use this oil and there is no alternative, your car shouldn't be going anywhere near this oil.

as mentioned, for your car the best oils would be a full synthetic 5w30 weight, Take your pick, Mobil-1, Castrol, Pennzoil, Valvoline, the list goes on, For me I have preference to Mobil-1 for that weight,

How many litres do you need when changing the oil in the 3.0 engine?

Good question, I need an oil change, might do it myself too.

Also, how do you dispose of the waste oil in the UK?

just used castrol edge 0-30 and it took 7 litres cost me £98 in oil as i had to buy two 4 litre bottles at £49 each robbing +@:<@ and is bmw ll-01 approved

Yeah, The 10w60 M oil is £12.95 a litre from my dealer too....ouch.

Opie Oils is meant to be cheaper but I see we still pay more than double what the Americans do

ebay was only £20 cheaper but then i would have to pay an extra £15 in postage plus i decided to do it at the weekend so nipped out and bought it.
got the mahle filter of ebay £6 inc postage bonus still realing from the shock of doing the full service took me 20mins at most, amazing far easier and cleaner than any other car ive serviced. unfortunately found rear pads worn and a rear spring snapped while doing the service balls
