Oil Oil Oil

Hi all,

merry new year and all that :D

so having a bit of an issue with zed. I noticed last week that theres a small puddle of oil under that car so i popped the bonet and it looks like Ive got whats looks like a slight oil leak from the front of the engine. Its coming from the top of the vertical part at the front of the engine just below where the bmw badge is (I had a look online and it looks from my research it seems to be where the vanos solinoid is? ive put a picture below and its where the yellow arrow is, the below isnt a pic of my engine but the part looks similar)

question if anyone can understand the above, any idea what these are and how much it'd cost to get them sorted?

second and more important question. clearly the zed has lost a bit of oil. im trying to check that oil but theres no dipstick so ive had to use this onboard computer thing. in the manual it says run the car for 10 minutes and press the button and it will take about 3 minutes if not running or 5 minutes if running.

anyways i click the button, it comes up to show me the weird picture and the word oil next to it. it then disappears and im none the wiser?

on my last drive back i got a beep and it said +3 degrees c so im guessing the engine is overheating from not having enough oil but i dont want to over fill it.

any help will be much appreciated.

That's just telling you it's cold outside, I can't help with the oil reading unfortunately, I've got an old fashioned dip stick on my car.

Firstly you can stop panicking, as has already been said the 3+ is an outside temp warning and nothing to do with the mechanical condition of your car. I don't know what you have owned previously but its quite common now for cars to have a 3+ temp warning. Its just there to tell you to watch how you go there could be black ice etc. If your car was genuinely overheating you would see it on the temp gauge etc.

The oil leak could be your rocker gasket leaking (very common). Its the gasket between your cam cover and the cylinder head at the top of your engine. This is then dropping down on to your vanos solenoids. It could also be your vanos solenoids seals as well, as there also a common oil leak. Neither of which is the end of the world. The vanos seals are only a few £ from BMW and are an easy fix, one you can do at home. The rocker gasket is a bit more costly/involved but also easy enough at home or a hour or two labour at a garage

Thats deffo solenoid seals mate, did mine a while ago.

And a vid to explain its an E46 but exactly the same job.

Happy new year, cheers, tug

Thanks for the replies all. Any ideas on getting an oil reading? Is it just a case of pressing the button and waiting? It doesn't seem to show anything. It doesn't say it's OK but also it doesn't say if it's not

do you see the bars moving?

[1----]
[-1---]

and so on then it stops, the odd thing is the car needs to have been running for 5-10 mins of so before it will so the end reading of

[----1] or ok

watch this from about 1min30

If the engines upto temp and been drove it usually tells you straight away, if its cold can take a while

yep the bar will go down let u know when to add a litre of oil

Mines always on OK but only do 4k miles a year lol
