Oil of choice

Hi All

This has probably been asked many times but what is the oil of choice for a 2004 E85 2.5SE?

The oil warning light came on today but I'm thinking of just topping it up myself until the lockdown is relaxed further and I can bring it to a garage.

Also is it 5w-30 I should be looking at, and how much should I put in?

Thanks for any advice guys!

When I had an E46 3 Series with that engine I used to top up with Castrol Edge Fully Synthetic 0W40, but I understand BMW have moved over to Shell Helix Ultra Synthetic.

For topping up purposes I wouldn't worry too much about the viscosity, just make sure whatever you buy meets BMW LL01 specification or the later LL04 one. The container should say if it meets one of those standards.

As for how much to add you couldn't go wrong with half a litre, but you've got the luxury of a dipstick so you could always check that!

IMO, 5W30 but matching BMW spec LL01 or LL04. Plenty of options out there.

Afaik, from min to max is typically 1 litre.

LL01 & LL04 are codes for Long Life Oil

If you are changing your oil regular you do not need this.

I use Shell Ultra Racing but this is in a S54 engine and may not even see 8000 mile before an oil change

My S54 just had new Castrol Edge "Supercar" oil in it, but that's no use to the OP as S54s use 10W60. M54s really don't want that!

Thanks for the input guys!

Did a quick check on 'Comma Oil Checker' and apparently the M54s holds 6.5Ltrs of oil!

So gonna just top it up and tell my garage to skip the oil change in my next inspection

Castrol edge 5w 30 if the oil check light as come on
Check level first, but I have found its usually onĺy around half a litre to top up .

Why would you skip changing oil + filter just because you topped up :? if its due its due :(
Only add a small amount initially when you do top it up , may only need half a litre
