Oil light when engine switched off

Hi All,

I've noticed i get a yellow oil light only after the engine has been switched off. I have pressed the 'check oil level' button on the dash, and all it says is 'oil ok' with no other indications...

Does this mean i need a little more oil in there?

Mine is the 2.5si - which engine oil should i buy?

usually the yellow light is followed by a small beep, this usually means you need to add 1 ltr... if the oil light is saying ok then i am a bit snookered i would give it a run let it get nice and warm and try the oil check again while driving.

0-40 longlife is the bmw standard from the dealers (lo4 from memory)
 
Yeah - it means more oil soon.

You need an oil that complies with bmw's LL01 or LL04 spec (latter replaced the former, LL01 is probably whats in the manual)

It'll be a fully synthetic, and 5w30 I think - should have details of which specs it matches in the smaller print - check that, it's the important bit.

Few weeks ago when mine did it, with beep, it still said oil ok when I prodded button. Added oil and it went away.
 
Ok, thanks, will add a bit more oil. I hate having no dipstick!

Will 0.75L sort it? Dont want to overfill...
 
How many of the boxes on the gauge are full?

If your concerned I would add .75 as you say and check. If one box is still empty then add the other .25
 
yep add as appropriate in small amounts and keep checking ... not keen on the system prefer a dipstick... remember too much oil is as bad as too little
