Hi All,

over the last week or so i have noticed the oil can light comes on when you stop the car and take out the key. its not doing it every time but now and again it will beep and the light comes on. i have checked the oil level and it is spot on, so checked all fluid levels and they are all ok. is it just a sensor thats playing up or more to it than that?

has anyone else had this problem? its a 2003 3.0l. full service was done late november last year and i've done about 800 miles since then.

There are two types of oil warning light:
Red = low oil pressure
Yellow = low oil level

I'm going to assume its the yellow one, you most likely have a faulty oil level sensor.

If yellow oil light comes on when you shut down car.. and you are sure that oil level is correct, then it is oil level sensor. Common fault E46 / which Z4 is based.

I was going to say the same.. if the dipstick is correct then its the oil pressure sensor is on its way out.

Might be worth removing it and inspecting it.. but as its in the oil sump and you have to drain the oil as part of changing it maybe easier just to buy a new sensor when you need your next oil change.

yeah the oil is fine checked it every weekend and always spot on. thanks for the advice i will look at changing the sensor when i next do an oil change.

Any signs of oil leaking from the back of the engine block to the bell housing? Could be a very slow leak, which even though the level at dip stick seems correct, an oil seal failure can be the cause.

not noticed anything but will check, the car is parked all week in the garage and not seen any signs of a leak, but with all the under plastics it may not get passed to drip.
