Sorry to question your knowledge, but I have a prefacelift Oct 2005 build , and I don't think I have a dipstick, although it is a 2.0, and when I press the button between the dials it brings up an LCD 'indication bar' that I always took to assume the oil level was fine. Looks like this? I::::::I hope this makes sense......

no worries :D

the 2.0 is a newer engine, perhaps that's it :? I know the pre-facelift 2.5's and 3.0's had dipsticks, I would suspect the 2.2 did as well. was the 2.0 available from launch or was it introduced to replace the 2.2??

I'll attempt to clarify then :D

All face-lifts except the ///M have no dipstick, just electronic gauges...
Pre-facelift M54 engined vehicles have dipsticks

Hate to confuse things, but from the Owner's manual:
"For a precise measurement and display of the oil level, it is necessary that the engine be at operating temperature..."
Heat causes oil to expand in volume.
EDIT: This does not explain a 1qt difference, but the display will read OK even at 15oz low, so this is a clue that adding 1/2 a quart is safe.
The manual also says the check oil display will read 'ERROR' if there is a problem with the sensor.

You DO NOT want to overfill the oil! If high, the display will show a little square to right of the usual range and will not show OK.

Re: dipsticks. It's not really facelifts or coupes or engine size that determine sensor vs. dipstick, it's engine type. All M54s have dipsticks. All N52s have sensors. Not sure about others, but probably N53-55 all have sensors as well.

The system shouldn't work when cold, it should just cycle through and give up.

You are testing with the engine running aren't you?

Go for a nice long drive and then press the button whilst moving.
 
My yellow light came on also on engine turn off.

I'll check the dipstick tonight. Anything special I need to know? Just pull on the dipstick and it should come up, right? :oops:
