Oil levels

Preparing for my (970 mile round) weekend trip, pressed the oil level button and it went up only 3 steps out of 4 for the first time, but still says 'ok'... Should I top it up ? If so how much does it need ? Thanks guys !

No - only top it up when it tells you to. Mine just went from 'OK' to '+1lt'. Can't hurt to carry a litre in the boot so you're ready though.

Checking the oil level
Your car is equipped with an electronic oil-level
monitor.
For a precise measurement and display of the
oil level, it is necessary that the engine be at
operating temperature, i.e. after uninterrupted
driving for at least approx. 6.5 miles/10 km. You
can have the oil level displayed while you are
driving, or while the vehicle is at a standstill on a
level surface and the engine is running.
You can have the oil level reading displayed in
the instrument cluster.
Press button 1. The oil level is checked and displayed
for approx. 15 seconds.
To exit the display sooner, press button 1 aga
1 Oil level OK
2 Oil level is being checked.
This can take about 3 minutes if the car is at
a standstill on a level surface, or about
5 minutes while the car is on the move.

3 Oil level down to minimum:
Add 1 US quart/1 liter of engine oil as soon

as possible, refer also to Adding engine oil.
4 Oil level is too high.
Have the vehicle checked immediately,
as excessive oil can damage the
engine.<
5 The oil level sensor is defective:
it is not possible to issue a current or accurate
measurement.
Do not add engine oil. You can continue
your journey. Have the system checked as
soon as possible.

Thanks Mitchy - this has confused me though. It 'scrolls' across the display while it is checking (and it was level, at operating temp), then stops at the third marker and says 'ok', there is no number shown :? I will read the handbook myself and check again on the way to Halfords...

EDIT - not confused... These are the different actions needing taken, in list form depending on where it stops. Gotcha

Love this feature of the Z4. My previous car (Civic) threw up a cryptic error message which I guessed to be the oil level. I topped up the oil but the warning wouldn't clear. Didn't want to drive it if it was a different issue (the error in the handbook said not to drive) so I had to call the RAC man. He comes along, plugs in to ODB, clears the error and it's all hunky dory... except for the 2hrs I wasted messing & waiting.

There's only 1 litre of oil missing over the entire scale, so I should of thought, that makes up 250ml at each of the 4 stages. Caution do not over fill
