Oil level

Morning all

Just a quick fairly simple question, I have a 55 plate 2.0i E85 SE, obviously no dipstick, if I wait until the engine has reached temperature and then check the electronic oil indicator is says (-1) what does this actually represent in terms of volume of oil required to top up?

Also reading up on this excellent forum is it correct that the best oil to use to top up is Castrol Edge 0W-30 fully synthetic. I have 7,000 miles to go to my next dealer oil service.

Looking forward to spending a day working on my car today, am fitting new front discs and pads (previous owner recently had the rears replaced but left the fronts) and after reading some posts on here I have also decided to thoroughly clean up and paint my callipers silver at the same time, car is black. Then it will be washed, clayed, resin polished and waxed ready to spend the rest of the Bank holiday enjoying driving around the fantastic country roads we have here in South Devon and Cornwall. :thumbsup:

Ha ha I was up at 07.00 and have already replaced the discs and pads, just about to start painting the front callipers, but remembered I needed to ask about the oil level, so have asked that whilst eating my bacon butties :thumbsup:
 
Does your dipstick not show as a 5 square block?

If full all 5 boxes are orange, and as the level drops the boxes empty.

This. When the car needs more oil there will be no boxes full and it will tell you to add a litre. No need to add any until it tells you to :thumbsup:
 
Supposedly if the oil sensor is defective, the oil light will come on & glow yellow.

My 2005 3.0 has a dipstick, so never bothered to see if it also can be checked in the dash
 
For the record, I have driven 30k in mine (it's on 89k) and I have only ever had to put 1l in once in the last 2 years ... Outside of normal scheduled services of course.
 
Thanks guys, I guess I will just leave the oil then, odd actually because I’ve just checked it again and the (-1) doesn’t show now, maybe I dreamt it, must have a look at page 81 in the owners manual as well, I suppose really I should just let the system do its job, it's quite hard though after 40 years of checking dip sticks

I think you were right about it being a lot to do, had a really good day though but only 3 callipers painted :o 3 wheels had no locking bolt on them so came off easily, took about an hour each to carefully paint the callipers, the 4th wheel a different story, has a locking bolt with splines and I have the locking bolt removal tool, but no chance of it coming off after over half an hour of trying I gave up to have a think about how to get it off, the one’s I have done look brilliant.

The Missus spent the day doing the car body, including renovating the hood, she’s done really well and the car is looking really good :thumbsup: good job she is as fussy as I am :D

Only problem now is this wheel with the dodgy locking bolt and obviously the one calliper :headbang:
 
Bloody hell, wish I could get SWMBO or my son to help with cleaning the cars :lol:

You're absolutely right, I feel very silly now :oops: its explained very fully on page 81, even in pictures.

I don't ask her to do it, she just gets on with it, might be something to do with the fact that she uses the car on a daily basis though I work closer to home so she drops me off, I am allowed to drive at weekends :lol:
 
Looks like you have made really good progress, try some WD40 on the bolt over night and hopefully it will budge in the morning :thumbsup: .
