oil level worries?

The oil level on my 2.2 is always at the right level but the stick it self is dry ( and even rusted in some places!!) The oil light came on the other day even though the dipstick said the level was fine?!? I added a litre of oil and the light has stayed off but again no change on the oil level on the dipstick? Thanks in advance for your advice!! :driving:
 
First thing - don't add any more oil for the time being!!

How do you mean the dipstick is dry - completely, not even up to level?
 
no, the level on the dipstick always rreads fine but the shaft of the stick itself is bone dry and even rusted! even when oillight came on level was fine.?!
 
If the dipstick itself it OK and has a reading, then the shaft doesn't really matter I wouldn't have thought, if it was oily too that would mean oil would be leaking from your engine, which would be bad news.

I'm having troubles with my oil indicator on my 2003 3.0i.

I checked the stick the other day and the oil level is almost on it's max. Still when I turn of the car I get the yellow oil warning light almost every time. My friend has similar problems with his Z4, he just adds more oil but somehow it seems strange if the oil stick says max.

Any ideas or suggestions?
 
Sometimes is the sensor which drives the light that malfunctions.

Adding oil is not a good idea. Overoil could creat problems
 
I've checked the oil level after night when the engine was 100% cold and the oil has descended fully, I always thought this was the "right" way.(?)
 
Well i've been driving around for a week now after last checking the level and the light keeps popping up almost everytime I turn the car off. I'm going for INSP2 in couple of weeks and I'll have this checked at the same time. I hope it's just a faulty sensor and the engine wont blow up before that ;)

Hm, I always thought the correct way was to have the engine up to temp then turn off and check. Oil expands as it heats.I know the electronic oil meter won't register until you're up to operating temps. Guess it's two ways toward a common end. As others have said, overfill is worse than running 1/2 quart low or so.
 
You are right, manual says you should check the oil after 5min, I'll check the level when warm too but I doubt adding more oil is a good idea when the level is already at max when cold.. blaah
 
Mine started to give the oil beep warning and yellow light on switch off sometimes. Dip was 3/4 up so I topped to max and warning has gone away. Looks like I have an over-sensitive warning trigger as well.

If you still continue to check the stick and level remains OK
