Oil Level / Sensor

Hi All,

Recently purchased a Z4 2.0 (06 plate)

A few odd things occurring regarding the oil light. Have checked the oil level whilst driving on numerous occasions and all is ok.

Turned the car off the other day and the oil light came on meaning I needed to top it up. I topped up and all was good.

Two days later, the ‘add 1L’ light came on whilst driving so I assumed I hadn’t added enough the first time. So when I got home I added about 500ml to be extra cautious not to overfill.

I’ve now just got back and engine off. The oil light has come on indicating another top up.

Does the above sound like a failed sensor? Or does it really need topping up? When I check the oil while driving, all the bars are full and it says ‘ok’

Can’t find any oil leaks anywhere either

How much oil have you added in roughly how many miles?
These engines can often burn a little due to failing valve stem seals but you would normally notice lots of smoke if you were burning much more than a litre per 1000ish miles.

Otherwise I suppose it could be the level sensor. I would be very cautious not the overfill it. For the cost, it might be worth dumping the oil and measuring how much comes out.

I bought it 2 weeks ago and have done around 150 miles. Last oil change was October 2019 with 4.5 litres.

I might do as you’ve mentioned and do an oil change myself for piece of mind rather than ruining the engine. See how much comes out and see whether the sensor is faulty

Had a code on my 2.5 for oil level sensor, mine has a dipstick so waited until I did an oil change before putting in a new sensor in the sump, new one seemed to take some time to settle down but code cleared and its not returned. Have noticed the amber oil light shows up from time to time, checked with dipstick and wasn't that low, topped it off to mark and monitored the light for next time. Car probably using some oil at 93k but no smoke evident in exhaust that I have noticed.
