Oil leak

Passed my mot with only 1 fail which was the anti roll bar mount was damaged but that isn’t surprising as I hit a pothole which took out my front tyre.

I had an advisory that there was a slight oil leak the guys words were "it’s tiny but it’s there and I can’t figure it out by looking as the cover gets in the way"

It’s essentially looks like it’s at the back of the engine where it joins the gearbox. I’m assuming it’s the rear crank seal but could it be anything else.

My mot guy said not to worry too much keep an eye on it. He’s a decent garage and does all my cars so I’m not but would like to know if it could be something easy.

Check out the rear end of the cam cover gasket, they spring leaks there and along the side above the exhaust heat shield and in the plug wells. These gaskets go hard and brittle with age and reperted heat cycles. The most common cause of oil leaks on Z4's. When replacing the main gasket if your model has round rubber seals under the cover retaining bolts replace all 15 of them so they get torqued down correctly as they go hard as well preventing correct torque down. Gasket sealant should only be used around the half moon shapes at the front and rear of the cover where the gasket changes its direction. At the front use it between the Vanos as well as the half moons. The rest of the gasket and centre plug well gaskets do not require sealant other than the points already described.

I’ll check it out, had that gasket fail a good few years back and it used to stink until hot where the oil was getting on the exhaust manifold which I don’t have this time so didn’t suspect it. Cheers
