Oil Leak

I have just purchased the car and am just going through it and finding the little bits and pieces that need repairing.

There is a lot of oil on the under trays, it looks like it has been leaking for a long while as it is thick and needed scraping off them. I have already changed the rocker cover gasket as there was a small trace of oil there.

The oil starts at the front of the engine and covers all the way to the gearbox, I have cleaned off as much as I can but it seems low down so I am thinking sump gasket. If it was the oil filter housing gasket would I be able to see the leaks higher up?

Is there a how too guide to changing the sump gasket as it looks like you have to drop the steering rack and cross member, are they a difficult job to do?

Any help would be most appreciated.

Many thanks

Ivan

subframe has to to dropped to do the sump gasket, not a job I fancied tackling.. paid 250 for an indi to do the job

Oil filter housing gasket, where it meets the block just above the sump gasket is a common leak, I would clean the areas off and check that first as it can look like a sump gasket leak.

I have just ordered the oil filter gasket, far easier to start with.

After stripping the oil filter housing off it is quite evident that this is where the leak is coming from (or at least I hope).

I have also replaced the rocker cover gasket, long overdue as it was just brittle plastic, so hopefully this will have cured the problem with no major surgery.
