Need to check above the cover and inside the engine bay from above, usual places to check are cam cover gasket, sump gasket and oil filter housing gasket here https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=BT32-EUR-07-2003-E85-BMW-Z4_25i&diagId=11_2201
If you get any oil burning and smoke in the engine bay that is a sign of the cam cover gasket going bad as it lets oil drop onto the exhaust and burns.

As above. When cold, feel around the back of the cam cover where it meets the head. This is usually where oil collects and drips down if its indeed a leaky gasket.

Hi keV
It's going in tomorrow so will hopefully have it sorted
I will post what the problem and solution was

Cheers
Steve

My money would be on either;
Vacuum pump
Oil filter housing gasket
Rocker cover gasket

All three needed doing on my zed when I purchased it.
They are all cheap and easy jobs. Only relatively expensive part is the profile gasket for the rocker cover.

I hope your mechanic sorts it for you :thumbsup:

All sorted panic over
Aircon dumped some condense whilst on the drive mixed with a little oil on the plastic under tray hence oily residue
Independent gave the car a good going over
Only found a small oil seal starting to weep
Going get it replaced with MOT in a couple of weeks :D
