Oil leak - what is this?

Hi there,

I'm in the process of buying a z4 coupe 3,0si from 2007 - but i'm a bit concerned about what appears to be an oil leak from the top of the engine. The oil is leaking around the bolts on the passenger side of the engine.

Anyone know what this might be and whether this is a quick fix or not?

Sounds like rocker cover gasket (I could be wrong though) if it is its a cheap fix at a good indy (or even DIY if you are that way inclinded) and could definitely be used as a bargaining tool to get good discount off the car.

If it really bothers you get a full inspection done on the car
 
Hi thanks for your replies.

The seller is private and he is not exactly the most knowledgeable guy when it comes to cars. The car has just recently (3000km ago) had an "inspection 2" which I assume is a full service. I've alsp spoken to the service guy who has taken care of the car during the last few years, but he claims there should be no problems. Still, it concerns me a bit - and yes I've used it already to get a hefty discount :-)
 
The reason for the discount however is not (I presume) due to the potential oil leak. I'm living in Denmark where we pay 180 tax on all cars which Means that a car like this only has a very limited audience

Rocker cover Gasket, if so you will also get a sickly sweet smell in the cabin now and again as the oil burns off against the engine
....This does probably mean tho that the head has been off in the past for some reason and that the gasket has not been put back on right...which may be of concern
