Oil - I've asked this before...

I'm sure I've asked this before but can't find the thread with search.

Opie oils list Edge 0W30 as the standard oil for the 3.0 Zed, but they list the Edge 5W30 as an upgraded oil.

I thought that it was the other way around and that 0W30 would be a better grade of oil? Anyone know which grade the dealer uses? I'm not sure that mine actually know, they keep putting me through to parts who go and read a bottle on the shelf!

Just need to know which grade to order as my orange light is on again, this car drinks more oil than anything I've ever owned!
 
Although, price per litre actually works out the same for this Mobil 1 5W30 from Halfords and I'm guessing this may be an even higher spec oil than the Edge?

Castrol list Edge 5W30 - suggest its down to personal preference, cost etc. with which brand you go with.

If you go on the castrol site and type in your car details the Z4 3.0 comes up as 5W30. As they are the experts and more importantly Asda are selling 5W30 at £30 for 4ltrs was good enough for me to go this route;)

Its noty online but is in the stores.
No other way round it u need to go the store and mix with all the chavs!
missus normally does the shopping so a bit of an eye opener for me.
Didnt think that shell suits were still in?
 
Hey I was shopping in Asda in my trackies earlier!! Granted I had just left the gym :rofl:

Thanks guys and will get back to Asda to see what they have on offer, failing that Opie or Mobil 1 it is.

Mine uses a "straight-through" lubrication system so by the time it's due a service the oil in the sump will all be fresh anyway!
 
Don't exactly know if this adds to the conversation, but stumbled across this from BMWUSA on a different site:

"BMW recommends that you check your engine oil level whenever you add fuel to your vehicle.

If you need to add oil between oil changes and BMW High Performance Synthetic Oil is unavailable, you may top up the oil level with one of the following approved synthetic oils. For information on checking your engine oil level refer to your vehicle's Owner's Manual.

The oils listed below meet BMW's Long-life rating and are acceptable for use in BMW Passenger vehicles and SAVs in the US market with gasoline engines.

BMW Long-life rating LL-01 Approved Synthetic Oils for the US Market:

* Castrol Syntec European Formula SAE 0W-30
* Mobil 1 SAE 0W-40
* Pennzoil Platinum European Formula Ultra SAE 5W-30
* Valvoline SynPower SAE 5W-30

Use only oils with an API rating of SM or higher.

The choice of the right SAE grade is based on the climatic conditions in the region in which you normally drive your BMW.

To best determine which SAE grade is best suited for your vehicle, contact an authorized BMW center."
