oil gauge

Hey everybody!

I know this question has already been asked and I've been searching for an answer on the internet for a couple of days now but couldnt find a clear answer.

I know how the digital oil gauge works on my 2007 2.5i z4, couple of time I had to fill 1 liter oil (yellow light when turning off engine) but after being parked for the vacation period (and after having been refilled 1 liter) I checked oil level and it reads:

[][] (2 dashes)
OK

shouldnt it be 5 dashes and ok??
I've read some of the posts on this forum but couldnt find any clear explanation. Maybe just my english, in that case sorry in advance! :driving:

Well 5 dashes and it's full, no dashes means that it's at the minimum level and add 1 litre of oil. At the moment you have 2 dashes so you need not do anything yet, do not overfill!

My read out looks like this : [ ]l

Does this mean the oil level is at max? I've not put oil in at all and owned it since January.

I often wondered this and your logic makes sense but I would leave it until it drops to the bottom mark as this is when the manual says you should fill with 1 litre. Noone knows the accuracy of the gauge but what you do know is that it will take 1 litre when at the minimum point so just wait until then. I wish BM would of put a manual dipstick in there because Id be a bit of 'check oil and top up frequently' freak!
 
doofus, yeah I'll let it go to 0 anche check if at that point the car will signal 1 liter needed by switching on the yellow thing at engine shutdown......hopefully it go that way :driving:
 
Hey guys!

i think I can confirm that the oil gauge is indicating oil level by showing something like:

[][]___
OK
(meaning 3/5 of the first liter are gone)

when it reaches 4/5 the yellow light goes off at engine shutdown and oil gauge shows:

[]____
+ 1.0 L

I went to the official dealer to buy some extra oil and he confirmed what I?m telling you.
