Hi all just woundering if I'm checking my oil the correct way I select check oil on the BC on stalk I have noticed sometimes when I start it that it dosent work but it does after I leave it bit longer not sure if it has to be in neutral or on run anyway once the gauge drops one orange block does that mean it needs 1 litre of oil thanks also what's BMW recommend oil grade as the car had a service in august and I'm the new owner now so not sure what the grade is because on service receipt it just says 7 litres of oil

You can see the level in quite granular detail in vehicle infirmation in the idrive. It takes a couple of minutes to validate after a cold start (naturally).

The bc gauge is probably the same. However, no one block does not mean one litre. From memory, one litre is about 2/3 the way down. Typically, the low oil light will come on amber when you turn off the car if its low and needs a whole litre.

Thanks Zedfive I just found in book could take 6.5 mikes drive to check oil and I think grade met be Longlife 01 5/30 or 5/40 not sure yeat but I'm sure I'll have a reply if it's fully syn and grade thanks

It can take a fair few miles to show the oil level through the stalk control. Don't worry.

Also a message comes up saying "add 1litre of oil" when you need to. Just go to bmw and ask for the right one. It's not cheap, around £18/20. But you'll know you've got the right one.

About two months before the car was due an Oil Service, I set off in the morning got to the bottom of our road, T junction stopped, an alert message came up along the lines, Oil Level Low, Please add 1 Litre at the earliest opportunity.

I did just that, nothing was mentioned to me when it had the Oil Service so guess no harm was done.
