Oil for a Z4 3.0si Coupe

When our cars were built BMW always recommended Castrol oils that complied with BMW LL04 spec. which meant Castrol Edge Titanium, but some years ago they switched to Shell and their Helix Ultra to LL04 spec. is what I have used in my 3.0Si (and 330i).

I would have thought any recognised brand should be fine so long as it complies with BMW LL04.

I have been doing some googling with the ll04 and then some searching.

Pipercross Performance Oils (Midlands Based) have an eBay account and they seem to be the most competitive. I got 7ltrs for a good price.

Do you think that some of these oil company's pay BWM to recommend their products?

I'm not sure they pay BMW for recommendations, but I'm sure they have to pay BMW before they can claim LL04 compliance!
 
My amber light just came on and had a look at what I've got on the shelves. Have found Castrol Magnatec stop start 5w-30 BMW LL04 rated. So this meets the spec,..... but does anyone have any knowledge about the negative effects of mixing different brands? I'm thinking that the magnatec is claiming friction reduction and clinging to parts in the engine. I can't imaging any negative effects, except that the magnatec stuff will be less effective or nullified if diluted with the existing oil. I wondered if its worth putting new stuff in/draining and filling up with a consistent brand/oil? Maybe I'm being over cautious/worrying about nothing?
 
It will be fine. As long as it meets the LL04 spec then just use it. I use Fuchs oil in mine and meets the LL04 spec and isnt Shell or Castrol . Bought from those Pipercross people.
