Oil for a 35i

I'm doing a trackday on Monday and although my oil level is showing in thecar as being just above the minimum marker and the op up light hasn't come on yet, I need to top it up as I imagine with lots of high engine speeds I could easily use some oil up. I rang my dealer yesterday, and not sure I believe what they told me, they said I need which was to use Castrol 5w 60. I thought it was more like 5w 30. What should I top up with?

Cheers
Jonathan

0W 30 mate, I picked some up from the dealer the other day.....

Sweet, thanks mate. Meant to reply on your post the otehr day and then forgot, sorry to hear you've had more problems with your wheels :(

My 2012 owners manual says 0W-40, 0W-30, 5W-40 or 5W-30 Meeting BMW LL-01, LL-01FE or LL-04.

0W-30 might be a little thin for a summer track day.

Castrol TWS 10W 60 is for some M cars.

Just had to top up my engine with a litre of oil, after the warning light came on and vehicle status showing it was down to its minimum level. These engines certainly get through the stuff, which is apparently normal.
Was advised to use 0W-30 grade, though any that are listed in the manual would have sufficed.

Does anyone change there oil on there 35i between normal services?

I do quite alot of short trips and it does seem a long time 2 years between oil changes.

Never changed mine. Only topped it up. I've hear that some people with service inclusive get free oil too. Mine is service inclusive but not oil unfortunately

Long running debate on other forums about this.

My advice is to take a used oil sample and send it off for analysis. Every two years might be too long but you can't tell without testing. Oil changes are expensive. Even if more frequent changes increase the engine life, they may not be cost effective.

If you don't race, changing synthetic oil every 7,500 miles / 6 months is about as useful as burning £20 notes.

Just bought a litre of Castrol Edge /BMW LL04 0W-30 for £18.70 for my 35. As recommended by the BMW parts dept.
