Hi all ... now the outside of my M is as good as can be the next place I want to turn my attention to is the engine bay . It’s by no means bad but I’d like to polish bits and bobs up .

So my question

Can I remove the top part of the oil filter housing with out draining the oil ?

Can I reuse the nut and what ftlb should it be done to ?

Thanks

Yes you can, It’ll clean up lovely, not done mine properly yet

Nice picture. :)
Brings up a question I have about the oil filter housing. What would usually cause the top part of the housing to be covered in engine oil?
Even before the engine is started, and hot?

Too much oil, causing leak's?
Poorly reinstalled oil filter and housing?
Leaking or perished rubber seals, perhaps after missing servicing?

I ask, due to recently viewing a Z4m, with this leakage as described, also rough idle and rough shut off noises, as was why i walked away from buying. I'd appreciate some insight if yous know more.

Yeh, there is a small o-ring that seals the bolt that runs through the centre. Usually comes as part of the kit when you purchase a new filter.

OP im going to remove mine and machine polish it at work this week, ill post pics of the results and give you some tips.

I’ve just changed my oil and filter ,I got it from my local BM dealer so was ripped off for fifteen quid instead of eight quid from yer local car parts shop ,had the o-ring with it but as for polishing it it’s clean enuff
