oil extractor pump

No not for the zed :roll: - would be for our old campervan - went in for a MOT and oil change - passed MOT with no advisories but they said when they went to unscrew the oil sump plug it part turned and then became hard to turn so just did it up tight again because of the danger of cross threading strange as I thought you could only cross thread when tightening :?

I know I may be able to get an over sized drain plug but as it's aluminium might end up having to get a new sump so thought about getting an oil extractor pump - apparently you can drain the oil through the dip stick - sounds a good solution but do they work ?

Hi Gov, I used an oil extractor pump regularly on my smart cars as they have no drain plug-never had any issues and it saves getting the oil running down your sleeve

Hi Gov, I used an oil extractor pump regularly on my smart cars as they have no drain plug-never had any issues and it saves getting the oil running down your sleeve

I'm pretty sure it was an impella? Make sure you buy one with a large enough capacity as I think they come in different sizes, it's possible with a smaller one but saves stopping half way through to empty it

I use a Pela 6.5l for intermediate oil and filter changes. Helps to have a little heat in the oil but works really well on the M54 and S54.

I'm probably being old fashioned but I always think gravity is better than trying to suck the oil up as surely your still left with old oil in the sump pan?

Not on mine, but yes been used on a zed. 6.5 litres removed so nothing left. When I do mine I remove the sump after to catch any oil missed. On the wife's car I gave up after about 3 drop of oil came out of the sump. :lol:

Not on mine, but yes been used on a zed. 6.5 litres removed so nothing left. When I do mine I remove the sump after to catch any oil missed. On the wife's car I gave up after about 3 drop of oil came out of the sump. :lol:

Interesting. Will be looking into this for next oil service.
Usually go to self-service garage to borrow a ramp or a pit for 30 mins.

Do you really remove the sump to check for oil or do you mean the sump bolt?
Sounds a little extreme to remove the sump :!:

I also have the Pela 6.5L one, have used it for years. I just make sure the tube is down to the bottom of the sump and give it plenty of time by doing other service bits whilst it works. I also pump it back up at the end and do a "poke about" in case any is missed, and, if the oil filter is the "drop in" type, I also suck out any old oil from there too. The way I see it, main dealers use the dipstick/suction method, and, unless you raise the car to the correct angle, the drain plug won't actually drain all of the oil either.

I too bought one of the Lidl ones earlier this year. Not used it on the zed yet but I tried it out on the wife's car. Towards the end you have to jiggle the suction hose around a bit to suck up all the remnants. As a matter of my own interest, I then took the sump plug out to check and only a few drops came out.
I reckon there will be more pooling of the old oil at the top of the engine that neither system will get out.

Hi Chris, where is this self-service garage? Access to a ramp/pit would be so useful! I've had a nose around for a ramp for rent but can find nothing within reasonable driving distance from Northants.

Sorry Lance, should have mentioned; when I'm in Holland- they have DHZ 'doet het zelf' DIY garages where u can rent space by the half hour.

Doubt u would find this in uk due to liability insurance issues.
In holland its not as tightly regulated- you sign a disclaimer to say any accidents are on your own back....
