Oil Extraction?

Hi everyone:

After some points of view; :)

Has anyone used an electric pump type engine oil extractor or the manual pump up type?

Any recommendations or general feedback on their use please.

Cheers

Hi, I've used a vacuum pump type extractor before-without removing the sump bolt afterwards it's difficult to say how much oil is left (if any) it's certainly less hassle than crawling underneath the car.
They won't work on all engines though, the N52 has no dipstick rendering the pump method useless!

Having done my own oil-services for years, I'd always advocate the sump plug out / drain method, if only for peace of mind! But also, as Rob rightly points out that you just don't know exactly how much of that dirty oil is left behind unless you meticulously measure out what you've extracted. Can imagine there's lots of 'pooling' going on all over the engine internals though.

Not a fantastic hassle if ur handy with a jack and axle stands or can find a friendly garage willing to lend you a pit or lift for half an hour.
I'm lucky enough to be located by a DIY garage here in Holland where you can rent a lift by the half hour at minimal cost. i'm sure they must exist over there in the UK...?

As above, I like to crawl under our cars and get all that hot dirty oil out, also let the jack down to one side and get even more out. Don't personally like the idea sucking oil out.

I use both now. Pump to get most if not all out then remove the dump plug. Much less mess overall. Did on the wife's Astra and the pump emptied the lost. Got about 4 drops out of the sump,

I had to buy a pump for our smart car as the sump plug looked knackered, seemed to remove the lot as the recommend amount went back in as it is showing half way on the dipstick now.
Wish i could use it on the N55 lump in my oner but it hasn't got a dipstick :headbang:

I have used both of my sports boat as there is no access to the sump plug.

The electric ones are great because you can set up the drain route and collection and simply switch them on.
The Pump ones need constant maintenance of the vacuum by pumping.
The electric ones are pretty cheap also in comparison to the cheap pump ones

Thanks for the replies folks,

I have always drained via the sump plug previously and let it sit and drain for a good while, some cars have easier access than others, thought I might try an electric pump type next time.

I'll report back it's success/comparison, failure.

:)

It's probably just as quick to put up on ramps and empty from the sump, even with a cuppa while waiting for the oil to drain your under half an hour for an oil and filter change.
