Oil Consumption Weirdness

Hey all

My 3.0L (53 model) seems to prefer running just below the minimum line on the dipstick oil wise. If I top it up to the max line, then every time I start the engine from cold a massive plume of blue smoke spurts out the exhaust. Literally just on startup, there is no smoke when the engine is idling or running, or at the end of a journey. If the engine restarts whilst warm there is no puff of the blue stuff either.

It does this on every cold start up until the oil level is back just below minimum where it will run quite happily for a thousand miles or more - or until I lose my nerve and top it up a little for fear of running it on too low a pressure.

Anyone else had this?

I did a full oil change 2 months ago, and it progressively dropped its oil level with blue puff start ups for the first month and has run now a full month just below minimum sweet as.

I object to pouring £10 of oil in every 2 months just for it to spit it out again, but it does seem that anything above minimum is too much for it. It has done this now for 20,000 miles with no noticeable issue elsewhere, and it sailed through the MOT with perfect emissions just before last oil change.

Any thoughts?

Does your oil telltale light ever illuminate?
If you are running low it will come on yellow while you are driving which means you need to top up within 30 miles and if it comes on in yellow after the engine is turned off it indicates that you need to top up soon.

If you need some cheap oil try E bay,Castrol oil section, there's 12 litres of SLX LL04 POWERFLOW BMW engine oil for £70-00.

Never had the warning lights on - and it seems once its dropped level to just below minimum it doesnt drop any lower.

My Uncle had a similar problem a few years ago. Turned out the previous owner had broken the dipstick and replaced it with an incorrect one causing him to massively overfill the sump all the time.
