Oil consumption and engine health

I know that some engines use more oil than others and this is not necessarily. cause for concern as long as they are topped up regularly but, generally speaking, is low oil consumption a good indicator of healthy engine or is it not that simple?

I'd say that low oil consumption is a good sign in general. There are exceptions but not applicable to our cars

Some manufacturers put a "get out of jail free" statement in the manuals stating 1000 miles/litre is normal (my old Alfa 156 and 08 Golf GTi for instance)

I havnt had to put any oil in mine yet from the oil service done 18 months ago(just hope the digital display/sensor is working  )

as do BMW and probably every manufacturer.

Some of the Roadster S owners will no doubt share horror stories. I get about 1300 miles/litre. This is considered average to good...

I have had my 2003, 3 litre auto for over two years and only have had the yellow top up light come up once. Although it does have yearly oil changes.
