Oil Colour

Ive had my zed a couple of weeks now and im not sure whether to get it serviced or not, or possibly just an oil change.

I bought the car with part service history and the last time it was serviced was at 18,000 it has now done 24,000 and the service indicator is suggesting a service in 8,000 miles.

Ive checked the oil and it is a golden brown colour which would suggest to me that it has had an oil change relatively recently OR is it a case of fully synthetic oils stay that colour? OR could there be another reason?

cheers

Jimmy

Fully synthetic can still go dark - I was in the exact same situation as you - bought with 22000 and for peace of mind I serviced mine at 24000 even though it wasnt due until near 30K..so definitely if your servicing yourself I would do it for peace of mind.

Surely with that low mileage you would want to keep it BMW stamped though, or are you just talking about a mid term fill and still getting BMW to do the next scheduled one?

Thanks for the feedback.

It hasnt got bmw service history, so I would just be getting it done at an indy and possibly do any inbetween oil changes myself.

My main question was really just about the colour of the oil just to give me some sort of indication of when it was last changed.

colour of the oil depends on a lot of things , first one is if who ever serviced it before flushed before the oil change , type of journeys etc , i use a flush and i ve seen synthetic oil look like new after 10k miles

You can put a litre in every couple of thousand miles too, so it's hardly surprising it stays looking clean ;)

Every time I have purchased a pre ownerd car I give it a full service - oils, filters, plugs etc - that way you can be sure you are starting with a relatively clean sheet as it were and then either service it from that point on a time or mileage basis. Peace of mind

I may just take your advise there Alan, any ideas of what a full service should cost roughly? (is this an inspection 2?)

I probably wont take it to a bmw dealer though because it dosnt have bmw service history so far.
