Oil check not working

Hello,
I have a 2007 Z4 E85 3.0i. I have checked my oil level several times over the past few weeks but it no longer says 'Okay', it just keeps showing those emblems moving from left to right on the instrument panel for a very long time. I change the oil myself (6.9 Qts.) and have for years, is the sensor broken? Anyone out there had this problem?

I despise the oil sensor. What happened to wipe, dip and check. If it’s starved of oil you’ll kill the engine before it tells you it’s too low.

Sorry can’t help further OP. Have the same on our E90. AFAIK there is no other way of checking, would have been great to have both. A manual check for the car guys and a computer for those not initiated. I’d guess must be a sensor or wire issue…

I would definitely take a read through this thread recently posted, there is a great description of how the oil level is measured and will probably help solve the problem. https://z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=146358

Interesting read. So in conclusion the reading of the level is accurate and robust. Still not ideal how long it takes to measure.

I’ve got nav in mine, so the reading level is much more accurate and never displays the previously read oil level. So I guess that’s good. I always add oil in 250-500ml increments. I’ll rarely wait till it’s that low to fill up a full litre. Which is where I disagree with the post. Why wait till you need a whole litre? I personally don’t want to deal with a litre of leaked oil in the boot, so don’t carry it routinely…

I've got the same system in my E90 and it takes 5 or 6 miles before the engine is warm enough for it to work, so I've got into the habit of waiting for it to give a reading before I floor it and I can be sure it is still working properly!

I never let it get down to "Add a litre" either, I usually add 500ml when it's down to the 2nd or 3rd marker. Which seems to happen quite frequently. :(
