Oil change

Just done a 1ltr top up last week and now the car is telling me I need an oil change (11500 miles)

Does it have to be done at a dealership like the servicing to maintain the warranty or can it be done anywhere, and cheaper?

Realise there could be an issue resetting the computer but that can wait till it's time for a full service
 
If its stillz under warranty and you wish to maintain said warranty then yes you will need it done at a main dealer
 
I have mine done at the main dealer but always ask for and get a discount of 15-20%

Just pull a face and say you want oil not a new car. :wink:

I was hoping the £220 was a joke. Will be asking for a price using my own oil which should save a few quid.

Also as a "belt and braces" have sent an email to BMW customer care asking if the warranty is invalidated if I get someone else or even I do it myself. Cannotsee why themain dealer has to do a simple oil change. The car doesn't know who is pouring the oil in ?
 
I am sure that you do not need the oil/filter change to be done by a dealer in order to maintain warranty status. Just be sure to keep receipts and paperwork to prove that the maintenance was done as required by schedule, in case it ever becomes an issue.
 
I also believe that manufacturers can no longer insist on servicing being carried out solely at their dealers to honour warranties.
 
You must take your car to a VAT registered garage in order for it to be 'legit' for warranty purposes.

Is the car now 2 years old I assume? And you didn't take the servicing package?

There is no such thing as a full service with BMW. Next service at 3 years is brake fluid and at 4 years its oil, spark plugs if needed (but they change anyway), micro filter and air filter (again if needed but they change these regardless) kinda pointless calling it condition based servicing as they don't actually check the items first. And then at 5 years it's brake fluid again.

Also worth noting that when it comes to selling the car further down the line to some people it will make the difference BMW fsh vs non BMW fsh and if you were to trade it back to BMW it will fetch less than one with BMW service history as they can't sell it on as a AUC.

I also assume your car is not under a BMW finance agreement most specifically PCP deals as there maybe certain clauses in it re servicing.
 
Still no official reply from BMW uk re the warranty implications but have been shopping around on prices at BMW dealerships.
Quite a bit of variation. Highest so far Coopers of Sunderland at £220 but £100 if I supply my own oil / filter. Cheapest (and best customer service) LLoyds of Newcastle. £190 or £64.95p if I supply the oil / filter.

Out of interest I did ask about why I need a change of oil so soon (11,500 miles and 16 months old) I was told it goes by date of manufacture as the oil does deteriorate over time even if not being used. I was told by LLoyds that my car was manufactured in the USA 5 months before being shipped to the UK and the oil change is based on that date. Apparently that is normal period of time and for some cars it can be a lot longer?

Two more dealerships to try before pricing up an oil filter and 8 litres of oil. Any advice on brand and type appreciated. Told a High performance oil is a must and the one used by BMW is £13.95 per litre plus VAT supplied by Shell and a synthetic oil which is made from natural gas???
 
Update.

Just had a reply from BMW UK which states that "you can have an oil change done at an independent workshop. But if something goes wrong with your car and our technicians determine that the fault is due to work that wasn’t done by BMW, this will invalidate your warranty". I cannot see how they could determine that as long as it is a legitimate garage and you retain evidence of the filter used and oil you put in are both BMW approved.

My local dealership has told me that the car actually needs a full first service which is calculated from the date of manufacture and not from the date of firstregistration and that service includes the oil and filters. The service manager informed me that BMW will accept a vehicle being up to a maximum of 3,000 miles or 3 months over the service date / mileage without it effecting the warranty which is interesting. He suggested leaving it acouple of month or 2,500 miles then having the service. He also stated that the I drive will inform the driver if the oil or brake fluids are below the required performance required independant of the service alerts.

Confused now to say the least.

Sent a response to BMW UK stating my annoyance at it all in the hope of discounts before deciding what to do but not holding my breath.
 
Just had an oil change and brake fluid change done on mine at a cost of £213 at my local BMW dealer. The reason I got it done was that the car is very low mileage and in mint condition and I wanted to keep the stamps up on the service book. Thanks for the link, just put our 2009 35i in to look up the costs for an oil service and the cost shown is £136 without the microfilter and £190 with.

Thanks. That is onevery useful link to save cash. May just make the difference to getting it done now as opposed to a couple of months time unlessBMW UK are in a generous mood with discounts :rofl:

Maybe missing something but accessed the site but cannot find how to obtain the costs?
 
Hi, enter your reg number and mileage on that page, it will then ask you to confirm the vehicle model. Once that's done you have a list of service options and costs, you can pick and mix what you want done, the standard oil change is £136 (for my model) + they do the standard scope for a further £19. My E89 has the idrive and you can check the status of the oil, brakes etc and the mileage left before they are due for servicing / replacement. Gives you a good indication of what might need doing. I change the engine oil once a year in my cars and I only drive about 7000 per year, felt it paid dividends with my Jaguars, so plan to do the same with the Z4.
 
Nope, done all that and no prices only details of what each service consists of and thats it or refers me to find my local dealer
 
Final update.

Just had a response from BMW UK and in a nutshell *Tough* :x

The official line is the services are based on the date of manufacture end of.

Any chance of a goodwill gesture for a loyal customer. *No chance*

Result will get the job done at non BMW dealers supplying the parts for a fraction of the cost with evidence in writing from BMW that it will not effect the warranty :!: .

With no intention of selling the beast then future resale prices are of no interest.
 
It's definitely an oil service? Although I'm sure on your E89 it's a 3 year brake fluid. Only because on mines my brake fluid was needed in June when the car was built and the oil was needed in October when registered. And the vehicle inspections that are due every 4 years (that's a joke in itself) is also due every 4 years in June.

But I noticed when checking my car recently that the dealer I last used for my service put both the oil and brake fluid changes in line with each other, not at my request but the last car I bought from that dealer that serviced the oil and brakes were every 2 years from date of registration but cars bought from other dealers have followed brake fluid on date of build and oil in month of registration.

It could be that some dealers update these dates when doing the pre delivery checks and others don't.
 
Checked 5 local BMW garages for price of an oil change service and the cheapest was £195 or £65 if I supplied all parts.

Bought 2x 4 litres of Castrol Edge 0W30 Long Life for £68 (Recommended by the dealership and only need 6.5 litres so will have enough left for a later top up), oil filter £7 and £9 for the micro filter all from local EurocarParts who matched the online prices.

Reasonable saving me thinks :D
