Oil change

Never done an oil change in my e89, and I'm truth haven't tinkered with a car for 3 years having bought new last time (very boring!).

I don't see a guide, but read a couple of threads so far.

Can anyone guide/confirm what's needed? 6L 5w30 LL fully synth - though one thread suggests 6.9L? Filter (does it inc the washer?)....anything else, or anything to watch out for? Run the engine prior?

Any help would be appreciated! Happy to be getting back into dirty hands territory!!
 
I just did my third oil change (every 10k) and 5 litres did the job, using Mobil 1 0-40w.
Seems to be an odd litre that won't drain out.
Luckily I had access to a lift so you will need to lift the car.
Stone guard under engine has access panel.
You will need a simple filter wrench to remove the plastic oil filter cap in engine bay, (Lidl recently sold these, I have one).
I think there is also a proper tool for this job.
Good idea to paint a witness mark so when you retighten you don't overstress the plastic cap.
Also the filter comes with a new copper washer for the sump plug, which I always forget to fit, because I end up refitting the sump plug, lower car, then open the filter box to discover the new copper washer!
Also don't be too keen to destroy the large o ring on the filter cap to fit replacement.
Some o rings supplied were too large a thickness to fit correctly.

Just now wish there was access to oil via dipstick as I have now been given a pump.
Anyone know if there is a secret plug to access sump from engine bay?
 
How do you know how much oil to put back in the engine?
Do you just measure how much came out and put the same back in assuming it was ok on the dash check?
Or is there an exact amount that should be added when doing an oil and filter change that puts it right on full?
Without a dipstick it seems to be a bit of a guessing game.
 
I've always warmed the oil first before draining on my old cars, it flows better, can't see any reason why not on a modern engine.

Warm mind, not hot, don't want to burn yourself.

Rub some fresh oil around the filter 'o' ring too before you fit it.
 
Ive done it a couple of times

I measured the oil in and the old oil out as paranoid about levels because of no dipstick

You need to get yourself an oil jug so you can accurately measure the correct amount of fluid , such as this one - no spills and excellent

Use a pyrex jug to check that the oil jug you have purchased indicates the correct fluid

Its also easier if you buy this oil filter cup wrench for when you change the filter

I can confirm this is a perfect fit , I bought a sealey one first and this didnt fit :headbang:

Sooooo, one of my in-laws works at BMW, so asked him to get a price on an oil change, just for awareness.

Oddly, I notice they say they use Mobil 1 0w30...why does everyone here quote using 5w30 out of interest? Conscious the manual says either but just curious!
 
I think the 0w 30 is a bit thin ? , lots of n54 owners using 5w 30 across the pond
