oil change

Hi,
I am new to the forum.
I'm looking for what type of oil to drain the gearbox and the axle for Z4 E89 S drive 2.0?

I live in south of France with "hot temperatures" and i think use 5W40 for change engine oil.

what do you think and do you have any other suggestions?

regards,

Hello, counter intuitively BMW is narrowing the viscosity range over time..this list is the official BMW position on the various oils

You’ll see they are going down from -40 to -30 and now even -20 oils..

The old standard everybody quoted was BMW LL-04 but that is now superseded ...

The main issue over time is the struggle to produce oils that lubricate well but do not contaminate the emissions equipment..

If you look at newtis.com that’s the official position but if you tap your car into the Castrol Shell etc web sites you will get their recommendations..

Arguably the more important issue to frequently change your engine oil and change the gearbox / diff from time to time.....80,000km

All my personal views..

Yes, I think like you.
I will stay on 5W40 oil because it is the max specification for my engine.
I hesitate to put thicker like the one I use in my BMW E36 2.8L (10W60).
I use it since 5 years on track days and never had a problem and I have good pressure oil with.
On my engine N20B20, I am afraid that it is too viscous and that the oil does not get everywhere !!!
Do you have recommadation for axle oil and gearbox oil? I have a mechanical gearbox.

DO NOT use the -60 in the N20 engine..its got a very complicated oil pressure management system in..you could f$%k it!

10w40 is the maximum viscosity..

Pbondar, Thank you fro your answer and your link
I have Z4 only since one week and I don't know the specification to N20B20 engine.

I read it's a good idea to take catck oil tank on N20 B20 to keep clean intake manifold .
I see sensor with 2 wire on the oil hose?
What do you think if i cut hose to take catch oil tank?

Hi Arsouille, I have a 35i and I fitted a mishimoto oil catch can 800 miles ago. Not too familiar with your engine but if you have direct injection an oil catch can is always a good idea. If you fit one try to put it in the airflow at the front of the engine bay, this keeps it cooler and can make it more effective.
They are easy to fit and there is no good reason not to fit one, just remember to empty it

Thank you mcbutler
I search second oil hose ( if I have problem where I cut one to put catch oil)
