hey all,
My 2003 3.0 needs an oil change.. Holy crap, the dealers by me have quotes from $95-179. What gives? Does anyone out there change their own oil? What do you use? Is the BMW oil Better than redline or royal purple? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

I actually dont think thats too bad. "The oil" if Im buying good quality synthetic stuff in the UK is pretty expensive. For example, 10 litres of synthetic engine oil from "Halfords" is £69.98 which in US money is $120-$140. I know your tax is cheaper but factor in dealer labor and its not too bad!!

I was going to change my own oil, but I had my wife’s car oil changed at Jiffy Lube and while I was there I asked them how much they would charge me to do the change with oil and filter I provide. They told me it would be $20.00. Jacking up the Zed, draining and disposing of the old oil, and the rest of the work, is worth more than $20.00 to me so I am going to have them do it for me. I think that is well worth the price and if the car were to fall while you are under it removing the drain plug will I don’t know about you, but I value my life more than twenty bucks. I am going to use royal purple as I have read enough to conclude that it is the best oil out there. :)

I have been quoted £99 for the oil serivce if I provide my own oil. At their labour rate thats abot a 45 minute job.

My Dealer charges me the litre bottle rate for oil making it significantly more expensive than even Halfrauds prices.

keep in mind that the z4's interval is recommended at 24000km. so if you were to spend $30 per oil change (as u do on dyno oil) and change the oil every 5000km ... do the math

I was thinking that wasn't a bad price myself! I guess we are used to UK inflated prices!

Yeah, oil changes aren't cheap. On the other hand, they're definitely one thing you should NEVER scrimp on. It's the lifeline of your engine. Since it's out of warranty, is there not an independent shop around that might charge less but still provide the level of service you need?

I did my own, have about $50 bucks (oil and filter) wrapped up in it. I will do it again, no issues at all, if you have any auto skills at all. I fell better knowing I did it, not some 18 year ol kid with a dead end job.

For future reference......
wheres the best place to order the 3.0 engine filter online?? Part Number?
Factory uses Castrol Syntec 10w-30 correct?
How many quarts?

On the UK show 5th Gear they had a Z4 on last night to see how much money they could save doing the service themselves.

I just had mine changed at a BMW dealer for 80 bux.
I do not think I could have done it cheaper if I did it myself plus it is only done every 15K ( I do mine every 7K )
I think that is more than fair considering it uses synthetic and they use OEM filters.

Did mine in June well my mate who works for BMW came round and did an oil change (which it needed i thought they would have done this prior to me buying the car ) pollen filter change and we had a good look over the car wheels off ect and few other small jobs and cost me very little but he has been looking after my family cars for years and is very good at what he does so i trust him to look after my Z.

The car is due her Inspection 1 around 4K which will not be until late spring with the mileage i do and the car will be 5 years old by then :D which i will get done at BMW but any further oil changes i will get done with the help of my mate.

I change mine every 5000 miles. I get the oil filter from my dealer for about $10, 7 qts of Mobil 1 from WalMart for $35 tax incl. Takes 30 minutes tops.

Werd: If you have never changed oil on a BMW get with someone who has. I first went to a tech session that my local BMW CCA Chapter held and asked there. I had 4 guys showing me what to do. You'll need something to tighten the oil cannister with so check into what you need before draining. Also watch so the draining oil doesn't get onto the topside of the underpanel. Once you do this you'll wonder why dealers charge you so much. Good luck.

btw, my dealer will only allow trained and certified technicians to work on BMW's. There are no 18 year old dumbarses at my dealership that work on cars. Those guys work in Sales and are all over 55.

I buy my oil and filter from the dealer (~$50 IIFC), changing every 7500 miles. I use the Topsider http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B0000AXBO5/ref=nosim/kkorg-20 to avoid ramps, 18 year old dipshits, etc. Works good for me.

I have a similar setup I got from Griot's Garage several years ago and it has been a wonderful tool for oil changes - until I got my 3.0si Coupe. What was BMW thinking when they built and engine with no dip stick??????

:slaphead:

AlanL, I think the extractor method is an outstanding alternative to draining the oil but what about removing any sludge etc. that collected in the sump (oil) pan area? How does one remove that stuff when using an extractor?

Cheers,
Greg

I get mine changed every 7500 miles and my place that has worked on both my BMW's uses BMW synthetic 5W-30 High Performance and I believe charged me $6.00 a quart. I bought and brought 3 quarts to homecoming in case ROADCAR needed a drink from all that driving! Did not have to add a single drop of oil! LOVE THIS CAR! :driving: :driving:

The extractors have a tube you can push all the way to the bottom of the sump area in cars that have dip sticks since the dip stick is typically located directly over the sump area. These worked very well on my old Audi S4 and since the filter was at the bottom you got the last of the dregs out when you yanked the filter after extracting the oil. Audi actually uses these in their service departments for some models of their cars. You can always pull the drain plug after you get all of the oil out via the extractor to get the last bit out.

The device became shelfware for me once I got the 3.0si 'cuz there's no place to extract from without a dipstick orifice.
