Just done my first oil change on my z4 (n52).
Had the car on ramps and drained the oil, new sump plug washer, new filter etc.
Started car and no leaks. Took for a test drive and after parking noticed lots of oil drips. Back on ramps and lots of oil around the sump and all the covers underneath. Panic starts.
Clean up the sump, undo the plug and re tighten.
I then think of all the cars I have done oil changes, none have leaked from the sump plug, then I realise my mistake.
The sump plug is not central to the service hatch, it's actually right on the edge, so when the oil is draining some of this must have gone onto the ally cross member and collected. Must of been where I was waiting for the last dregs to come out, potentially driven by gusts of wind as I did this outside.
Cleaning all the mess showed it was dirty oil (black rather than golden) so gives me confidence it's not leaking.
Live and learn.
